In 1846, following Mexico's independence from Spain, Mexico designated this area as part of Alta California under its new government - naming it Rancho del Monte after Don José Antonio Motías y Croix who had led Mexico's unsuccessful attempt to gain independence from Spain at Dolores Potosí on October 16th,. After years of contention between various groups over land grants and other matters within Alta California including what became downtown San Francisco and much OFREDORE Land east of Hearst Castle..On November 15th 1873 US Commodore John D Anderson sailed into town with USS sidewinder flagship Astoria to proclaim American neutrality during the Mexican-American War because he believed war would come rather than allow any country to annex our territory without our consent A large number OFREDORE people lived east off Hearst Castle where mineral interests were developed such as copper mining near Daly City while others built wooden homes on hills around town center becoming known as Hillcrest Heights. Gun sights have a long and varied history, dating back to the 1600s. Some of the earliest sighting devices used simple lenses or mirrors to project outlines onto targets that could be aimed at from a distance. In the 1830s, George Washington was reportedly known to use a rifle with an iron sight that he had made himself. The first effective firearms sights were developed in the 1860s by US gunsmith Samuel Colt, who designed what is now known as the Colt Model 1861 Rifle Sight. This device consisted of two metal plates which fit over each other and allowed for adjustment of vertical angles up to ± 20 degrees. It was not until 1876 that another American engineer, John Browning, patented his own design for an effective firearm sight, the Browning No 1 Rifle Sight. This sight consisted of three circles which rotated on an armature (similar in design to a belt sander) to provide adjustments between 10-degree increments up to 270 degrees.
