Monterey is a city located in Monterey County, California. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 56,815. The name comes from Spanish and means "place where theumbs are gathered." The first Europeans to see Monterey were the Coast Miwok people who built their village on Cannery Row in 1795. In 1821, A.B. Mills founded an adobe mission at Monterey Bay and named it San Francisco de Assisínto del Rey de México (St Francis Xavier's Franciscan Mission). In 1846, Mexican author Doniphan y Castro wrote about his experiences living near Monterey Bay on Isla Mujeres and published three books about it: "A Narrative of my Expedition into Mexico," "The Vestal Virgin of Amalfi Coast" and "Description of Alta California". One account by Felix Diaz gives an idea of what life was like for Native Americans living near Monterey during this time: The coast hereabouts abounded with seals, otters, foxes and other small game; but we found no fish or shellfish; except some few small mussels which we caught in large quantities while fishing off Point Pinos... This is one of the most interesting coasts I have ever seen... It would be difficult to convey even a limited idea of its beauty without leaving Penzance behind us."[1] In 1849 Doniphan y Castro built a stone lighthouse at present-day Morro Castle to help guide ships passing through the strait between San Francisco and Acapulco. In 1850–51 two more lighthouses were built: one at Alvarado Reef and one at Cape Mendocino. The United States Navy established Naval Station Stockton in 1862 as part-time headquarters for Operation Neptune's Spear during which Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna attacked American shipping in nearby Monterey Harbor. After months of skirmishing within striking distance of Stockton Harbor, Commodore John Doolittle reached San Francisco on July 27, 1944 with his aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 71) after flying over Japan en route there from Ulithi Atoll. On December 11–12 1944—the day before Christmas—divergent winter storms caused severe damage to stockyards along North Beach Road leading up Highway 1 from State Street northward across Fourth Street Bridge over Toole Creek canyon (now known as I-5), resulting in 3 fatalities among 5 crew members aboard USS Enterprise when that vessel grounded her off Point Reyes National Seashore approximately 20 miles southeast shoreline.[2] A five year effort by state highway department engineers led to repairs costing $163 million which improved road conditions throughout much of California,[3][4] including provision for interchanges now known as I-5 southbound between State Street/Fourth Street Bridge over Toole Creek canyon eastward toward downtown Los Angeles[5] Ida Boulders Monument honors Ida Boulders who was born May 9th 1880 in Protection River Indian Reservation Alaska Nome Salish & Kootenai Nation & died November 14th 1970 aged 95 years

Monterey was founded in 1775 as a small French trading post on the southwestern coast of California. The area now known as Monterey Peninsula was first settled by the Ohlone people, who hunted and gathered resources from the coastal cliffs. By 1821, Spanish settlers had arrived and began to build homes and businesses in what is now Monterey County. The following year, Mexico won its independence from Spain, and Monterey became part of the new nation. In 1846, when California joined the United States, Monterey became part of Alameda County. However, the city's growth slowed after 1850 as other nearby towns gained momentum. In 1853, however, San Francisco City Council passed an ordinance creating a town center around Fort Point at the mouth of Carmel River. This led to increased development in Monterey due to its proximity to major population centers. The city reached its peak during World War II with an influx of GI's and their families who erected military facilities along Pacific Coast Highway 10 near Seal Beach and then developed downtown into a vibrant commercial district filled with stores, theaters, hotels and restaurants. During this time also emerged some key personalities in local history including Mayor John Farragut (1896-1968), Jr., Businessman Loren Eisenger (1914-2006) and poet Ted Hughes (1928-2012).
