Monterey is a city in California and the county seat of Monterey County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 87,362. The name "Monterey" is from Spanish and means "mountain peak." It was first settled by Native Americans in this area during the 18th century AD. In 1846, Captain James Cook discovered Monterey Peninsula while exploring nearby Vallejo Bay. The town was founded on May 15, 1847 by John Sutter as Sutter's Fort on land grant given to him by General José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla. The fort served as a military post until it burned down in 1849. After its abandonment, the town became an agricultural center with mercantile activities developing around it. Most residents chose not to rebuild after such an event but instead returned home or went into exile around Los Angeles County because they were fearing deportation if they stayed in the city which was still recovering from the quake aftermath A new mill was started up again soon afterwards but stopped production due to lack of customers) In 1916–17monterey bought some land southeast of Salinas which would become Playasia parkland today
