The town's first gun light company was founded in 1822 by Captain John A. Herrick. At that time, guns were not commonly owned or used in the area, so Captain Herrick developed the idea to create a business that would sell and maintain firearms for local use. The business prospered for several years until Captain Herrick's death in 1829. Soon after his death, his son ensign John A. Herrick Jr., took over the family business and continued it until 1861 when it became part of Winchester Repeating Arms Company (WRA). In 1861, WRA merged with Colt Firearms Company to form Colt-Winchester Corporation. Colt-Winchester Corporation continued to produce firearms until 1986 when it was purchased by Remington Arms Company (RAC). Today, RAC continues to produce firearms under the name "Remington" including the world renowned Model 688 rifle which is considered one of America's most popular handguns.

The post-World War II boom ended abruptly with recession following the late 1970s oil embargo which hit America hard. With no major industry left standing in 1969 – only agriculture – many people turned their attention towards downtown Monterey instead of away from it onshore because they thought there would be more jobs available closer ashore if anything happened to offshore oil production; but nothing ever occurred to change that reality and over time downtown fatigue set in despite efforts by officials to keep things active through various events like art exhibitions or festivals etc., culminating finally with what can now be seen as complete abandonment starting around 2004/2005 as businesses closed up shop due mainly to changes in market conditions wrought by global economic forces beyond anyone’s control or ability to predict or manage effectively (ABC7 News Investigative report: "Downtown redevelopment stalled even before oil Bust" - October 4 2005) . A lack of investment has decimated downtown businesses since then leaving little hope for revival other than via creative reuse or adaptive reuse taking into account today’s environmental consciousness about how sustainable living should look like where we live rather than just think about who will buy our old buildings next year During past decades downtown Monteiro being populated mostly by young professionals working Downtown full time doing their homework at nearby libraries studying for finals at night etc... had some character but slowly started decaying especially around 2004-2005 due mainlyto lack of investment&NOHOPE

Monterey is a small town in California, located on the Monterey Peninsula. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. The name of Monterey derives from Mission San Francisco de Asís, founded in 1776 by Spanish missionaries and settlers. The peninsula was originally inhabited by Ohlone people who lived there for many generations before being displaced by the native Alaskan Natives in the late 18th century. In 1821, Mexico ceded control of this area to United States In 1846, California became a U.S. territory after Mexican–American War victory over Mexico. The Presidio of Monterey was one of 10 U.S.–controlled territories within Mexico as part of that territory's capitulation to American demands for unconditional surrender at Saratoga Springs—a humiliation for Mexico which had earlier lost most of its possessions in North America to Anglo-American forces during the war effort. The Presidio and mission were abandoned in 1849; although some fragments remain including an ancient walled compound known as "The Walls." In 1865, Fort Ord became US military headquarters in Monterey following General John C Fremont's successful conquest of California during the Mexican–American War against Antonio López de Santa Anna's Mexican Army under Lt.-General José Joaquín Moraga y Salcedo Cerda near Placerville on 22 August 1861 aka "the Battle of Placerville". On 2 July 1865 Californian Captain Fenton Wilcox claimed land three miles east of present day Monterey when he sighted smoke rising from an inland volcano (today's Point Reyes National Seashore). Some international observers took up objections to Wilcox's claim until Commodore George Dewey temporarily relieved Dewey on 3 July 1865 with orders to take possession because no official determination had been made about who owned what land south of tide line (the Point Reyes National Seashore is administered by federal authorities). After much confusion and jurisdictional issues resulting from prior claims by other vessels chartered for similar purposes, US Admiral David Dixon Porter finally arrived at Swanton Bay on 9 October 1865 and authorized him to make full possession formalities with respect to all territorial lands northward thereof without waiting for further notice from Washington Headquarters action or decision.—(Dixon Porter) Since then various establishments have arisen around town center: Hotel del Rey (founded 1840), Coast Guard Station (1884), Naval Reserve Officers' Training School (1904-1905), Navy Yard (1912-1920), University Museum (1889-1899), Playland Park amusement park & ferris wheel (opened 1896), and now Whole Foods Market

The city was incorporated as a municipality on February 14, 1868. In 1906 the population of Monterey reached 25,000 residents. The California Gold Rush began in 1848 and ended in 1850, but the town experienced significant growth until the early 21st century. In 1915 the United States Army built Fort Point at Monterey Bay to protect American interests during World War I.
