Monterey is a city located in the Monterey County, California, United States. It was founded by Captain John Brougham in 1821 as an English settlement on what are now the Monterey Peninsula. The first permanent European settlers were Spanish Franciscans who arrived in 1769. The town's name comes from "merced," meaning "fruit" orchard. In 1848, the U.S. military built Fort Point at Cape Mendocino to protect American shipping lanes passed through Monterey Bay and its harbor. The fort was destroyed by a storm in 1849 and never rebuilt; it is today known as Fort Point National Monument. In 1865, Leonidas Polk became governor of California and ordered the construction of the state's first school system in Monterey County using money allocated for that purpose by his predecessor, John Cranch. That same year, Commodore George Dewey landed at Monterey with his squadron of warships seeking refuge from Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Dewey's ships anchored near present day Donnybrook Beach while he explored northern California and selected sites for new U.S.-Mexico border posts between San Francisco and Mexicali City on the Pacific coast and Yerba Buena Island on Angel Island off Marin County in central California as part of his sweeping land survey that included much of southwestern California. A small group of American soldiers garrisoned at Donnybrook Beach manned a small cannon called a "garland gun" designed to harass Mexican fishing fleets operating off Santa Cruz Island northeast of San Francisco because they could not approach within range without being shot down; this practice continued until about 1880 when Mexico began leasing coastal property east of Sonoma County for fortified facilities known as Presidio La Playa (later Rancho El Valle) which provided cover for nearby Missions Concepcion de la Purísima Concepción (1776), San José de Zaragoza (1780), Nuestra Señora del Carmen (1784), Nuestra Señora de las Nieves y el Monte Carmelo (1800) and Agua CalienteMission Northern Coastline Park on Highway 1 south of Visalia since 1921). The first steps towards establishing permanent white settlements were made hereabouts beginning withCaptain John Brougham’s Expedition into this area under Captains James Cook(2d Fleet)and Nicolas Guérin two years later.(1st Fleet 16 Nov 1775 – 3 Apr 1776) then Robert Gray(3d Fleet 4 Feb 1777 – 15 Sep 1779). From these early pioneers came many families over time including: Humboldt family settled near Present Day Pebble Beach starting around 1800; Mariano Castro family also established themselves some time around this time along with Mission Santa Cruz being founded about 1850; Cabrillo Dominguez family moved here about 1860; Pico group arrived circa 1870s; etc etc etc etc……….. It should be noted that there have been numerous other groups active hereabouts such as those mentioned above plus numerous others throughout history if one looks hard enough! In any event, regardless of whatever else may be written about theseearly endeavors hereinbelow it must suffice that Gun Lasers have their beginnings right hereabouts!
