Monterey is a small town on the central coast of California. It is located in Monterey County, about 30 miles east of San Francisco and 45 miles south of Los Angeles. The population was 9,765 at the 2010 census. The name Monterey comes from Spanish for "mountain peak." The first Europeans to visit this area were the Spanish conquistadors in 1542. They named this part of California Province of Alta California after Mount Pico, which they saw from their ships on the Pacific Ocean. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna invaded Monterey County and destroyed most of its settlements. However, some people managed to escape and return to rebuild their homes and businesses. In 1849, American soldiers burned down many buildings in Monterey while occupying Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. This event helped improve relations between America and Mexico. After Mexican independence was granted in 1848, many Americans began arrive here because it was a strategic location for trading with Mexico and Peru along the Central Coast of California. Many investors started arriving in 1850 to start new businesses such as mines and mills that would help contribute to what would become known as “The Gold Rush” era in California history. A post office was opened at Monterey in 1853 by Colonel George Washingtons order to serve people living near Fort Point on Surry Island who could not mail letters due to high shipping costs across the ocean. After two years operations stopped because there wasn’t enough mail being sent; however, a new post office built just north served until 1912 when all postal services were discontinued due to budget cuts within local government). Famed actress Edna Ferber visited Monterey briefly during her 1925 trip through California before continuing on into Oregon where she wrote her autobiography about her experiences traveling sickly throughout much of America that year (Edna Ferber – A Biography). Monterey is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in California and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years. In 1821, Mexican general Antonio Llewellyn Cerón decided to establish a new capital in what is now downtown Monterey after Mexico's independence from Spain. However, Mexican officials soon renamed the city Monterey after General José Joaquín Mora y Gómez who had defeated Spanish forces at the Battle of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1846. The first post office was established at Monterey on July 12, 1851. The town became an incorporated village on December 5, 1872. On October 14, 1906, the state of California passed Senate Bill No. 4 which granted citizenship to all citizens of Los Angeles County regardless of origin or place of birth including those living within 1/2 mile of any public square or park where such Citizenship could be claimed without paying taxes for that year or future years During World War II many residents chose not to fight because they were afraid they would be drafted into military service and serve in Japan or Germany instead After World War II most residents moved away and today there are very few people living near monterey beach
