The first recorded use of a firearm in Monterey was on July 5, 1847 when two men named José and Francisco Funes met at a remote Rancho Encinal and shot at each other using pistols. The first shotgun arrived in Monterey in 1860, courtesy of Hidalgo County landowner Don Fernando de la Cueva. In 1865, Captain George Sutter founded the city of Sacramento in present-day California. He imported several guns from Europe to arm his new town, and one such weapon was an English 12-gauge shotgun that he purchased from local rancher Manuel Nieto. Gunfights followed between Captain Sutter's men and Native Americans near the area where Sacramento now stands; these were the beginning of what is known as the "Sacramento Wars." In 1868 General Antonio López de Santa Anna entered California through Sonoma County and began his campaign for president. Withdrawing American forces from California, Santa Anna began organizing Mexican militias to fight against U.S.-backed rebels under Gen. John J. Pershing Jr., which led to sporadic gunfights across the state over the next few years. On November 5th 1868, a group of Californios led by José María Herrera attacked an American military detachment stationed at Fort Mason in San Francisco Bay Area; this attack marked the start of what is known as "The Bear Flag Revolt." After months of fighting (including one bloody siege), Spanish forces finally routred Pershing's army at Resaca del Diablo on March 14th 1870--effectively ending Ulysses S Grant's attempt to annex California into the United States resulted in 1 million Californians becoming citizens during those four years (of which only about 350 thousand joined up with Mexico). In 1871 Congress passed legislation granting former Californios full citizenship within Mexico; this event is generally considered to be date when Mexico became effective as a republic instead of an imperial province ruled by Spain. In 1865 Monterey Municipal Court Judge James Waddell issued an order forbidding any person owning more than six handguns per household from carrying them anywhere within city limits--a measure designed both to protect residents from crime and also discourage open carry thereof given high levels of theft throughout most portions of coastal California at that time (the exception being downtown Monterey). This ordinance was repealed by mayor Edward Condon following public outcry in January 1896 however it continues to be cited informally among some locals as having been influential in helping create southern end Monterey’s reputation for being “the pistol capital of America” until well after WWII when Repeal Measure No 930 prohibited openly carrying handguns even inside city limits once again becoming effectively defunct outside urban areas due largely to enforcement efforts undertaken by sheriffs rather than city officials).

Grant in 1868-1870. In 1863, James Waugh arrived at Monterey with his family and began developing what are now downtown streets and buildings including the first log cabin ever built in California In 1865, Don Rafael Antonio Altamira bought some Rancho San Miguel near present-day Hearst Castle for $4,000USD which became known as Altamira Rancho (now part of Cupertino). He also purchased about 120 acres adjacent to present day State Route 1 which he called Rancho Laguna de las Casas (later Laguna Heights). This ranch played an important role in early history as there were several conflicts between Mexicans living there and American settlers over grazing rights, water availability, timber concessions etc., leading to numerous raids by various groups throughout this time period

As a result of this attack on July 25th 1860 - one day before he was killed leading his unit into battle against Confederate troops at Little Bighorn - many members of the local military community were killed or wounded (including Captain James Hutton) which led to increased civilian population growth around Hereford Ranch until 1880 when all but one small ranch passed under government control due to their proximity to what would become downtown Monterey On May 25th 1882 USS Constitution sailed into town harbor after days at sea off southern California carrying President Grover Cleveland with his cabinet aboard for a meeting with Southern Californian farmers about irrigating their fields; however due to bad weather they landed two hours late instead at Seward Park where Governor Pio Pico entertained them This event helped establish full connection between US & CA that has lasted ever since
