It is the county seat of San Luis Obispo County and home to many cultural attractions including Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Monterey Peninsula State Park. The first Europeans to explore what is now Monterey Peninsula were Spanish Jesuits who sailed up the coast in 1542 looking for new land to colonize. In 1769, Captain Juan Bautista de Anza founded Rancho Santa Cruz del Sur on present-day Sandia Heights near Humboldt Bay. The mission was abandoned in 1814 because of skirmishes with Native Americans. In 1821, Californian Manuel Nieto bought Rancho San Felipe from Pedro Cámpora for $5,000 (). With this purchase, Ventura County began forming. On April 12 of that year, Mexican Governor José Joaquín Murillo proclaimed that allrano (los angeles) be divided into two counties: Ventura and Santa Barbara – also part of Mexico’s attempts to gain control over Alta California following the Mexican–American War (1848-49). On July 8 of that year, an unsuccessful attempt was made by three Mexican soldiers under Colonel Antonio Lopez de Mendoza to take possession of Rancho San Felipe from Manuel Nieto by force; they were repulsed with much loss by Nieto’s men and horsemen. While ranching operations continued on the property until after World War II when it became state parkland, most visitation occurred during summer months when beaches are open for swimming and sunbathing. A local radio station served as airwaves for early warning signals used during World War II as well as being a launch pad for numerous oceanplanes flying over Monterey Harbor
