Monterey is a city located in central California, on the Monterey Peninsula. As of the 2010 census, its population was 33,554. The name "Monterey" is thought to derive from the Spanish word monte, meaning mountain. In 1849 it became part of Mexico and was known as Jalisco de México. In 1853 it became an American territory and in 1865 it joined the United States as a result of the Mexican-American War. The city has been continuously inhabited since 1776 when Mission San Luis Obispo was founded by Franciscans near what is now downtown Monterey. The first Europeans to visit Monterey were Pedro Fonsségur and his men who explored this coast in 1541 and found no land fit for human habitation except for small islands near Point Conception which they named Santa Cruz de la Mariana after St Francis Xavier who had settled there in 1534. These initial explorations led to American settlement of the area and in 1776 Captain John Smith discovered Monterey Bay while sailing for Spain with 400 men under Lieutenant Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. With over 4000 residents living on more than 10 miles (16 km) of shoreline at various points along the bay, European traders soon began exploiting its resources including salt water shrimp, clams, octopus, cockleshells, wine grapes and other fruit trees that would become well known around Sonoma County today. By 1847 about 1700 acres (610 hectares) had been developed along with 1 or 2 adobe buildings used by mission staff and their families before being abandoned during gold rush fever years about 1850-1851 because so many people were looking for money instead of finding any real riches at all! The early missionaries helped start a slave trade but ended it after discovering that slaves could not be baptized so they reverted back to free labor only making money off them through goods bought from Indian masters rather than selling them outright like some Native Americans did! This race issue must have been really confusing to white settlers because they started calling these natives "the People", something that still crops up today among some locals! In 1861 Governor Pio Pico issued General Order No 5 which closed all missions throughout California if “the number” of converts increased more than ten percent each year without exception; this order effectively ended missions due to overcrowding caused by Mexican émigrés fleeing slavery in Southwestern US states such as Texas; however most missions reopened within 3 years following passage of Proposition 8 which repealed Article III Section 2 of Constitution establishing state equality between races! It wasn't until 1907 when Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla establishedMission San Francisco de Asís further inland from here becoming one of America's most important Missions ever! A few months later on November 6th 1909 President William Howard Taft signed Resolution 910 authorizing Water District No 6 trustee José Cámpora Moreno to purchase land at Point Hermosa adjacent to Tomales Creek inside present day RanchoSanta Fe National Monument effective January 1st 1910!!! However even though we're located right next door Californians aren't too familiar with this pretty little town called "Merrillville" just across the creek!!! It should come as no surprise then that during World War II much military activity took place here including Naval Air Station Earliest Use Of Aviation Field And NAS Moffett Field Which Today Is Home To CA State University Davis } As one might expect during an era where technology was advancing rapidly new inventions occurred frequently including automobiles – first built & tested by members of local automobile club - on October 12th 1903 Charles Sorensen drove his horse & wagon into town & demonstrated how cars worked front wheel drive system before driving home again During WWII Clark Gable plays Sgt Al Capone in movie "Scarface" filmed at nearby NAS Earliest Use Of AviationField And NAS Moffett Field Which Today Is Home To CA State University Davis} One can easily imagine how life would've been different if history had not progressed quite differently - plenty of amazing technologies wouldn't exist today if not for advances made during those times!]

The name "Monterey" comes from Mission San Francisco de Asís, founded in 1789 by José Altuve y Peyote, who was also the first European to enter Monterey Peninsula. This electric company became one of the most important technological milestones in Californian history and helped create modern day technology jobs throughout much of Silicon Valley during the 1930s-1970s boom period before fading away during decolonization and economic recession in the 1980s and 1990s. The downtown district has been revitalized over recent years with new shopping malls, restaurants, bars and nightlife venues such as The Alley nightclub/film theater complex across University Avenue from City Hall Square (now University Avenue), while smaller neighborhoods have seen development around Isla Vista Marina Park beachfront areas near downtown where there are large yachtboats moored for storage or recreation while people can walk along sandbars to view dolphins playing among kelp forests
