Monterey Park, California is a city in San Francisco County, California. The population was 66,471 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in San Francisco after San Francisco City and it is also the most populous U. S. city east of Los Angeles. The Monterey Park area has been inhabited by Californian Native Americans for over three centuries and was first settled by Missionaries of Jesus in 1821 before becoming a part of Mexico City. After Mexican independence from Spain in 1848, Monterey Park became an American territory under President James K. Polk's administration as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1851, John Hughlings Jackson founded what would become known as Jackson & Sons Furniture Store on Grant Avenue in what is now downtown Monterey Park. In 1865, George Washington Cable bought land southeast of present day Olive Drive and built Hollywood High School on this property to serve as a public school for his children and their families living nearby on Olive Street between Grant Avenue and La Brea Boulevard (now Crenshaw Boulevard). In 1886, Pacific Railway Company laid tracks through Monterey Park from Encinal to Redwood City to provide access to jobs at its new Temescal Steel Plant north of town; construction began that year and progressed rapidly due to local support efforts including petitions from civic leaders like Mrs. Jules Marvin (founder of Loyola Marymount University) with help from then-Mayor Samuel Goldwater The first general store opened in 1906 along Adams Ave., just south ofcurrent Avenida de la Paz/Grant Ave., near where today's Julian Avenue meets Ritchie Highway: "Adams Grocery" operated until 1912 when it sold its premise to Matson Navigation Company who rebuilt it into "Matson Navigation Pier". For many years thereafter matson navigation ran the store & restaurant combo which still exists today next door to Eben's Toy Store across Julian Ave from Safeway grocery shopping.. later renamed simply Safeway.. They named their new town Monterey Park after their home state of Massachusetts where they were born: New England’s Plymouth Colony had been founded in 1620 by English Puritans seeking religious freedom from British rule. The town site was surveyed by George Street & Son under contract with Theodore Roosevelt on November 12, 1889; construction began on February 15th following a public vote to plat the area that would become Monterey Park
