Monterey Park is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 381,898 as of the 2010 census. Monterey Park is adjacent to Koreatown and Chinatown. It is also home to the Monterey Park Center for the Arts and The Monterey Park Recreation District. Monterey Park's history goes back to 1871 when Don Miguel de la Serna donated land for a public park in what is now downtown Monterey Park. In 1906, the City of Los Angeles purchased 760 acres (270 ha) of land east of Beverly Boulevard from José Reyes Hidalgo for $5,000 cash. This area became known as Chavez Ravine and was used primarily for grazing and agricultural purposes until it was developed into an urban enclave with artificial waterways and parks in the 1930s by developer Olaf Preuss. In 1933, Monterey Park Mayor Oscar Cisneros announced that he had found a buyer for Chavez Ravine - two developers who were interested in buying land on the other side of Beverly Boulevard - but they would have to build something first. They came up with the idea of creating an arcade complex called “The Forum” which would be three stories high with a large atrium on top that could house up to 350 people at a time. Work started on “The Forum” in 1934 but it never got off the ground because it couldn't compete with Hollywood's more popular attractions such as The movies or The theme parks. In 1938, Pasadena-based Mayfair Properties acquired Chavez Ravine from Olaf Preuss and began developing it into one of their largest tracts ever purchaserized in Southern California - totaling 1,815 acres (650 ha). Mayfair renamed their property "Monterey Park" after its home town in England where they had been born and raised – this name stuck around until 1990 when they sold all their holdings within Monterey Park proper including "The Forum" to local entrepreneur Jack London Jr., who then rebranded it "Jack London Square". during World War II most people worked outside during military service or were Natchez Bluffs residents working along Santa Monica Blvd near US Route 3 while others lived inside close by like Playa Vista due to lack of housing available locally so there wasn't much development taking place

Monterey Park was founded in 1887 by Hondo and Anna Logue as a small agricultural community on the peninsula between Torrey Pines National Monument and Point Conception National Monument. The name "Monterey" came from an earlier French colony, Ville Marie (formerly known as Monterey), which had been established on Angel Island in 1821. In 1912, the town became a U.S. military post during World War I; it was closed after the armistice and re-opened as a civilian community in 1922 following World War II with growth from agriculture to industry.
