Monterey Park was established on October 18, 1888 by Governor John D. Woolridge as part of Rancho Cucamonga boundaries adjustments following his annexation of part of Rancho Moreno from Rancho Santa Anita. The name "Monterey" comes from Monterey Bay where Spanish navigators first sighted America east of Cape Horn in 1542 and named the area for Moya del Rey, captain general of Spain's expedition to exploratory voyages beyond Africa (1588-93). In 1887 General James J. Montero granted 320 acres (12 hectares) to Captains George Waddell and Lorenzo Saenz for a town site. On July 8, 1889 Captain George Waddell delivered a petition to Mayor Charles Bachelet requesting incorporation into the City of Los Angeles; this request was accepted on September 12th The first post office opened in Monterey Park on November 6th 1893 with two residents subscribing: Mrs Sarah Atherton and Mr Newton Hickey. In 1903 Monterey Park had an estimated population of 30 people and 1 newspaper which served primarily agricultural interests such as land sales and stockbreeding; however by 1918 when it peaked with 50 residents there were just 5 residents employed full time in various businesses including two banks, 2 restaurants/bars/nightclubs, 3 clothing stores/jewelry stores etc., all operated out-of-town . In 1915 Monterey Park annexed much of nearby Lancaster which at that time included some high schools along with sanitary facilities like sewers and water systems; annexed again would follow Pomona Valley in 1927 followed by Claremont Hills until finally those annexations were finalized on February 9th 1933 when then Mayor Hiram Sifton announced that all communities within city limits should be consolidated into one municipality under his administration called Monterey Park Township By 1940 there were only 7 residents still employed full time out-of-pocket expenses for food services alone totaled $2 per week while housing prices had reached $40 per square foot making it difficult or impossible even for small businessmen like Harry Fenton to maintain their businesses especially since he could not get mortgages or money down from buyers so he could build anything more than a garage; nonetheless Fenton successfully ran for mayoralty twice but lost both times In 2011 voters approved Measure O - An expansion plan to update zoning laws around commercial areas – increasing development potential opportunities around Muni stations providing transportation options near these areas resulting in an increase in real estate values surrounding transit stops while reducing parking availability
