Monterey Park is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 24,813 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Valley and is bordered by Pasadena to the east and west, Midway City to the north, Lynwood to the south and east, and South Pasadena to the southeast. The original inhabitants of Monterey Park were Native American people who lived around present-day Monterey Park Avenue. In 1846 Mexican soldiers burned down a village in what is now Midway City as part of a campaign against local Resistance leader Juan Bautista Alvarado. The town was founded by pioneerCalifornian farmers named Edward Cady and his brother George Hargrave after they surveyed land for a new county seat in 1847. The name change came about because midwinter rains made many adobe buildings weak due to water damage. In 1881, white men bought much of what are now Midway City and Lynwood from Mexican settlers for $1 per acre (later raised to $5 per acre). They started farther downriver near where Lake Arrowhead now stands but quickly abandoned their land because it was too rugged for farming or fordevelopment. That same year sawthe opening of one of America's first major amusement park complexes when Selandia Land & Water Company built an amusement park on former military property in downtown Monterey Park called "Tootsie Roll". At that time only whites could visit without being Forbidden Traveled which limited access to most other parts of Southern California until well into the twentieth century. During World War II there were several large munitions plants located in Monterey Park including Naval Ordnance Plant No4(now known as Lockheed Martin) which manufactured torpedoes and mines; Navy Yard No2(now known as McDonnell Douglas) which manufactured submarines; Proctor Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., Inc.(owned by Constellation Shipyards) which produced PT boats; Los Alamitos Ammunition Research Establishment(now known as Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory); plutonium production facility at Hanford National Laboratories; Monterrey Arsenal Ammunition Plant(now known as Rancho Santa Fe Dam). These plants declined during postwar years but continued operation until 1957 when they closed following development at Hanford that increased production rates without resulting in any new jobs nearby. After World War II, many young people left Southern California for better opportunities outside of California during the economic expansion that followed with high levels of job creation throughout Northeastern United States through Interstate Highway System construction creating modern metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles County along with suburban growth throughout Southern Californiasouthern border extending into Nevada
Monterey Park is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 26,874 at the 2010 census. Founded in 1887 as a small town on Monterey Peninsula, it became an incorporated city in 1913. In 1920, Monterey Park annexed part of neighboring Banning and adopted its current name.
