Monterey Park is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 20,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Monterey Peninsula and borders inland cities of Escondido and Claremont. The city's nickname is "The City that Closes Its Arms." Guns have been a part of Monterey Park since 1868 when two US military officers, Captain George Armistead and Lieutenant Edward Cushing bought land adjacent to what is now Monterey Park High School in order to build a shooting range for their unit stationed there. With the repeal of the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution in 1871, armories were no longer allowed and gun magazines were not legalized until 1917. In 1915, William Hoads developed an oil well near present-day Redondo Beach which led to him becoming one of the first people to own a gun magazine in town. In 1927 he started advertising Gun News (later renamed Shotgun News) Magazine as one of "the leading weeklies published for all purposes." From this beginning Gun News has been published continuously since 1927 without interruption save for World War II which interrupted publication for six months due to government censorship regulations then current. In 1970-'71 there was much talk about handgun control following several shootings at schools across Los Angeles County including one at Long Beach Polytechnic High School that left four students dead and thirteen injured; after these shootings local politicians created a committee called "The Monterey Park Commission OnGun Violence" with the charge “To recommend steps by which citizens can reduce or prevent firearm violence within our community” reported Hearst Newspapers on November 3rd 1971 . One report from this group stated “There are more than 1 million handguns registered with police departments in Los Angeles County” yet only 9% have ever been used in crime – just 12 out of every 100 000 transactions! The commission also recommended placing warning posters around school campuses urging parents not to allow their children to carry handguns into school Monterey Park became an unincorporated community on February 24th 1977 when it annexed Rancho Bernardo east of Interstate 5 where today's Cal State University Northridge campus stands

In 1916, Monterey Park voters passed a resolution authorizing the city manager to buy shotguns and pistols from outside sellers and issue them to residents free of charge. This policy was later renamed the "Monterey Park Shotgun Program." In 1934, Monterey Park handgun ordinance was amended to allow concealed carry of firearms on private property within the city limits. The amendment also allowed citizens to bring home loaded firearms without having them stored in an armory or locked up at night. In 1966, Proposition 187 became law in California and repealed all previous handgun ordinances in the state including Monterey Park's. As a result of this referendum campaign promise made by then-Governor Ronald Reagan, many handguns were brought back into circulation in Monterey Park as part of Operation Gun confiscation.

It is located on the Monterey Peninsula and bordered by Lake Elsinore to the east, Automobile Club of America to the south-east and east, Glendale to the north-west and west and San Gabriel Valley to the northwest. The Monterey Park area was first settled in 1847 as part of Rancho Monterey grant given to José Castro. In 1853 Gilroyanosurceded Rancho Monterey when it was given to Manuel Nieto. In 1857 Antonio Canedo bought Rancho Monterey from Manuel Nieto for $5,000 + cattle and vineyard land. In 1863 Don Alejandro Obregon ceded portions of Rancho Santa Rita del Rosario grants including parts of present day Monterey Park in order build his mission complex there which remain today as Mira Mesa Mission National Historical Park. The community grew rapidly during this time with many new homes being built along State Highway 56 (now I-10). In 1907 Jack London wrote "Gold Rush" while living attoolshed 6 miles northeast of present day downtown Monterey Park in what is now known as Angel Stadium

The first Europeans to visit what is now Monterey Park were Spanish missionaries in 1769. Mexican land grants were given out in the area during the 1836 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican–American War. The city was founded on May 10th, 1911 by a group of citizens who included Edwin Laughlin and Hiram Brockway from New York City as well as William Sibley from San Francisco. In 1924, they annexed parts of Pasadena and Holmby Hills. The annexation created more competition for resources within the city limits and caused some tension between different social classes; this led to the nickname "The Ghetto of West Hollywood." In 1949, Monterey Park became one of nine towns in Southern California designated as part of President Harry S Truman's American Plan to build new homes for low-income Americans east of Interstate 5. This housing development was known as "the monterey project". In 1957, following passage of Proposition 14 (the state's anti-housing referendum), Monterey Park enacted an ordinance that banned advertising orêthat promoted developments with more than 50 units per acre . With only 2% growth over the next 25 years, many downtown businesses closed or moved out during this time period; however, many small businesses stuck around because there wasn't another option nearby for them to move into after high rents came onto the market outside of Los Angeles County during that time period. In 1990s several redevelopment projects took place Downtown including: Citizens Bank Plaza (now called Woodbridge Center), First National Bank & Trust Building (now called Midtown Tower) and Panasonic Pavilion which served as home to then NBA’s Lakers before their move from LAX airport back to Staples Center in 2003. The last major redevelopment project ever done in downtown Monterey Park occurred prior to its incorporation into Pasadena via annexation took place with responsibility for Parkside Boulevard being transferred from Downtown Pasadena government control back under City management effective January 1st 2001 when Neighborhood Services District No.(NSD)2 assumed responsibility for all public services formerly provided by DPD including public parks & water systems[1]. Thereafter neighborhood services district operated under a cooperative agreement with PASADENA CITY COUNCIL until it disbanded on December 15th 2006 due largely due budgetary issues associated with mandated changes made by Mayor Gil Cedillo which resulted in closures/transfers within NSD2&Parkside & other areas withinMC [2][3] As such most aspects currently facing residents are those dating back more than ten years ago which has led some residents feeling abandoned Record number Jameson Blvd address has been vacant since early 1800’s

Monterey Park was founded in 1887 by wealthy ranchers, including George Richards and his son-in-law, George C. Marshall. The city was named for Commodore John Monterey of the United States Navy, who had died in 1856. In 1916, Monterey Park became a city of Pasadena.
