The first settler in Monterey Park was George Chapman who purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) of land from José María Cámpora for $4,000 in 1847. In 1856, John Sutter founded the town of Sutterville in what is now Pasadena and sold his holdings to Jedediah Smith for $15,000. In 1857, David Hahn bought two tracts of land east of Monterey park from Samuel Morse and built the first posthouse there. From its inception until 1918 it served as an all-male community where residents could attend public school and engage in religious services free of charge to male residents only. In 1922–23 female students were admitted when Pasadena Unified School District decided to open its new high school on a site formerly occupied by Hahn's home. In 1916 US Representative Manuel Olivas moved his family from Mexico City to Montecito on Santa Catalina Island after serving three terms in Congress representing California’s 4th Congressional District (northwest corner). Olivas had become interested in citrus production while serving as United States Senator from New Mexico and decided that oranges would be the major industry here because they could be grown year-round with little frost damage or other difficulties typical of other fruit crops such as grapes or apples Olivas named his citrus plantation Monterey Park after one of his constituents living near him on Santa Catalina Island – Captain Edward Ayer – who had invested heavily in irrigation systems there some time earlier during World War I when Orange County’s then-new county seat was still called Dana Point (now Huntington Beach). Ayer donated approximately 2 million trees to help produce excess crop acreage which led to enormous profits for those involved includingCaptain Ayer & Sons Ranches which became part of Unocal Corporation following World War II; Colonel Jesse Jones became Chairman/CEO & founder/President Emeritus Of Southern California Edison Company; Roy Randall became Managing Director(& Founder) Of Bank American Express Plaza Development Corp.; Captain Edward Ayer died suddenly within weeks after donating the trees; Mrs. Ayer continued feeding local schools children until her death 15 years later at age 94+. After Mrs Ayer's death many descendants relocated their farm equipment & operations inland so that they could continue operating their business long distance (& maintain close personal relationships w/ local children thru email correspondence). Today most people know about this project only thru movies made about it over 50 yrs ago! Monterey Park is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. The Monterey Park community began as one of several places around Los Angeles where draft dodgers and other criminals could hide out during the early 1800s. In 1892, Monterey Park's first post office opened. In 1907, Monterey Park incorporated as a town. In 1912, the city built its first school which became known as "The School of America" and served grades 1-12 until it closed in 1969. In 1925, local businessman Harry Chandler donated land to create Northridge Recreation Area which would include an open air Stadium for football games and other events. In 1951, when then- Mayor Harry Helms recommended that annex Monterey Park into Los Angeles County so that it would have more tax revenue to support infrastructure projects such as schools and streets, the City Council approved his request by a 3-2 vote. The annexation process took many years because of opposition from some residents who felt they had been wronged by the move and argued that their neighborhoods were not affected by the new boundaries. After finally being annexed in 1960, Monterey Park experienced rapid growth with increasing access to education and jobs within county limits while preserving its unique character.
