In 1869–70 Jardin de la Villa purchased an additional parcel from Castro which included most of today's Highland Hills sector of the city limits On February 15th 1870 James Wemyss donated 5 acres (20 ha) east side of present-day Paseo del Norte Boulevard near I-5 south to become Playa del Rey beach reserve for future residents and workers; this donation has since been expanded to include many more acres along Paseo del Norte Boulevard across from Pacific Coast Highway/SRP Landfill/Monterey Peninsula Open Space Reserve

The name Monterey Park comes from Mission San Luis Rey de Francia which was founded in 1821 on the site of present-day Monterey Park. The city is located on a small peninsula between San Dieguito Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It occupies an area bounded by Interstate 805 to the northwest, Menlo Avenue to the east and Hermitage Road to the south. The original town was laid out along Meridian Street between Second Street and Third Street in 1887 by Colonel George Armstrong Custer's regiment as part of his campaign against Mexico. The town quickly became known for its produce market, its wharf at Solana Beach and for ranching around its perimeter. In 1912 Monterey Park merged with neighboring Encinitas to form one municipality with a total population of 25,000 people. In 1916 it seceded from Encinitas because of increased taxes levied by that city on behalf of other towns within San Diego County which were annexed into San Diego during that year's consolidation process. In 1940 Monterey Park became an independentCity after achieving full sole control over its government through passage of an ordinance establishing municipal elections by secret ballot rather than through Propagation Act methods used before then by cities within their boundaries who were subject to state regulation via Board Of Supervisors elections which took place concurrently with City Council meetings at which votes were recorded but not passed without further action taken by either body subsequent to public notice given pursuant to City Charter §6(c). On November 6th 1941 Mayor John Aiello resigned effective December 15th due largely to pressure from Supervisor Donny Walters representing portions of north centralEncinitas adjacent thereto upon recommendation offered jointly therewith by Mayor Aiello and Vice President Franklin D’Angelo regarding possible annexation or incorporation therein intoSanDiegoCounty under provisions made operative thereby prior thereto including authority granted hereinby both bodies politicly constituted aforesaid notwithstanding any objections thereon setting forth causes thereof at a special meeting called For That Purpose Held At The Sentinel Hotel Ballroom On October 14th 1942 By Mayor John Aiello And His Assistant Deputy Assessor Clarence Worthy Withdrawn From Present Practice Thereof By Order Of The Superior Court dated November 5th 1942 Who Said No Admendment Or Amendment To This Ordinance Was Allowed Proposing That Name Which Was Defined As Southwestern Heights Within Limits Demanded By Supervisor Donny Walters Respectively

On January 1st 1898 the City of Monterey Park annexed Rancho San Miguel which included most of what is now downtown Monterey Park as well as much of what is now eastside Lomita and westside El Monte
