The city was founded on November 3, 1887 by Mexican American settlers and named for Monterey Peninsula in southern California. It became an American city on November 3, 1924. It lies adjacent to other cities such as Pacifica and Salinas and is part of the San Gabriel Valley region. The name "Monterey" comes from Spanish settlers' designation for an area along the海边 (Marine Coast) populated by Native Americans who lived there before Europeans arrived. The first European to visit Monterey Park was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769, during his exploration of Southern California which included present-day Monterey County. In 1821, two years after Mexican independence from Spain was proclaimed, members of the United States Exploring Expedition under Captain John Broughton explored Monterey Park and its environs In 1836, Don José Marmolejo established Rancho San Miguel de la Alumna at what is now east side of Main Street in what is today's town of Salinas. From here he began to sell some land that would become Monterey Park and many other areas around Calabasas County includingpasadena and Encinitas. As development proceeded throughout most of these early years much private property remained undeveloped except near Rancho San Miguel where small farming operations took place until 1906 when state law gave public ownership to all ranchos within county limits or so it seemed. In 1916 developer Harry Wecht purchased 3 blocks south of Main Street from Don José Marmolejo for $1 million dollars only to develop it into one of Southern California's leading office complexes called Central Avenue Plaza- later known as Pasadena Place Towers. Many people consider this period between 1916 and 1956 Dirty Money because much money changed hands at this time with developers getting tax breaks and low prices for land because World War I had interrupted demand for agricultural produce following hostilities overseas). At about this time new residents began moving into the city proper with many coming from eastside neighborhoods like El Monte where homes were being built on top of truckloads of dirt brought overland over winter by mail order families while workers dug ditches, laid pipelines, built schools etc... quickly becoming incorporated into their adopted community then gradually assimilating into their surroundings This process continued through ensuing decades as waves after waves more immigrants arrived followed those already living in the city limits without any introductions or setting up shops or businesses initially but slowly integrating themselves socially/economically eventually creating a mosaic formulating Greater Los Angeles constructed over increasingly extended periods since various ethnic groups competed among themselves usually achieving dominance through political power struggles characterized by patronage networks often intertwining with business interests
