Assembling journal entries dating back to January 1st 1886 recall Captain Waddell writing “On Saturday we arrived at Coyote Hills having traveled about 20 miles over rough ground covered with sagebrush Mountain passes […] We halted there three days before coming downriver so that our horses could get some rest etc…… After spending two nights among these cliffs [sic] we came down yesterday morning Safely landed under highmountain cover about 12 miles below this place camped for last night near creek bottom watering our horses now rested all day long & are very much refreshed; Yesterday we made fortifications on top wagons stack[ing] hay bunks 4 feet deep middle height & put earth filling between logs fill[ing] each hole 8 inches wide & 9 inches deep making a strong bastion about 350 lb gain/losses today no use making any more improvements today due nothing new found along riverbanks other than some Box Elder trees half way up stream” captains Wynn, Robertshaw + Jorgenson later wrote: “We placed four guns behind logs breastworks inside fortifications two were mounted 6 shots each facing east towards Presidio Creek while two others faced west towards Live Oak Canyon Creek junction just outside our line […] Our goal was liveoak canyon [sic]. If captured our prisoners could be exchanged without going through Mexico City where jail conditions would be unbearable….. This fortress will protect us against possible raids or attack by hostile Indians living within five or six miles….we are confident that if attacked we can repel them successfully using only our arms & numbers leaving no women or children unprotected”).
