Monterey Park is a city in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 70,816 at the 2010 census. It is located on Monterey Peninsula, within the San Gabriel Valley metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Monterey Park were members of Spanish expeditions led by José Altamira and Gaspar de Portolà in 1769 and 1770. In 1821, Mexican land grants were made to Juan Bautista Alvarado and his brother Francisco Alvarado, who founded Rancho Santa Clara unincorporated in 1825. Mexican land grants continued to be issued until 1882 when President American Mexico received a grant from King Victoria of Spain that encompassed much of modern-day Los Angeles County. In 1848, two brothers - David Cahuilla and Manuel Nieto - purchased Rancho Rinconada from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $2 million dollars. They named it Monterey Park after their childhood home in Sayreville, New Jersey which they had visited as children. In 1870, about 30 families had settled at Rinconada including ten men who bought land north of the present-day city limits; one familyLive Oak Tree Nursery still stands in that location today as does the old schoolhouse (now Community House). On December 12th 1870 – during an election campaign stop – John Pemberton announced he would soon purchase all of eastern San Gabriel Valley for $10 million dollar plus interest which he immediately did with funds raised by hisacy public auctioning off 204 lots on December 14th 1870 totaling 6 acres (2 ha) near Present day City Limits of Monterey Park with lots measuring only 1/4 acre (0.6 ha) each! After 3 years of hard work Pemberton’s dream became reality when General Land Office approved his application on March 2nd 1874 for the entire valley! This monumental event forever changed our community as over 400 families moved into what is now known as Monterey Park from all over Southern California including Pasadena & Pomona making up almost half the current population! With this new influx came new opportunities for education and businesses quickly sprang up throughout downtown & North Central Monterey Park giving rise to what we know today as The Business District! Today’s residents are proud advocates for their community values such as environmental awareness & diversity along with experiencing quality local food options abound via farmers markets every Sunday morning starting at 7am & numerous other amazing amenities like State Fairgrounds across town or simply taking a walk around Downtown streets lined with classic grandeur homes built between 1860-1920!
