The first post office in Monterey Park opened on October 15, 1892. The name of the town was chosen because of its location near Mount Pinos and Monterey Bay. On July 24, 1922, the City of Monterey Park annexed part of Menifee Valley which included much of what is now Riverside County. On December 3 of that year, the portion annexed by Monterey Park became an official city with full voting rights and power to make its own decisions both locally and politically within the limits set by the state legislature.
