On December 15th 1933 Mayor Leland Stanford dedicated Interstate 5 southbound between Montebello and Lancaster just east of present day Pico Rivera Boulevard exit #7A to commemorate the settlement's pioneers including John C McCullough (founder/editor-in-chief of "Los Angeles Times"), Wanda Dempsey (founder/CEO of PepsiCo), Harry Chandler (winner of two Emmys), Jock Mahony (co-founder/president/COO Of Touchstone Pictures) and others that helped make it a thriving community full of professionals during what has been called “The Great American Boom” period from 1925 through 1945%. During World War II many residents came out to work in defense manufacturing plants such as Lockheed Aircraft Corporation or United States Steel Company which opened up opportunities for women like Betty Lou Brownell who worked at Ford Motor Company or Nella Larsen who worked at Kaiser Aluminum Workshops until they were fired because their husbands got drafted into military service. A big part in this boom was the opening up of Los Angeles County which allowed more access to jobs in transportation and services while also providing affordable housing which continues to be an important component today.
