The early residents were farmers who grew grapes and other crops. In 1887, they established the town of Montebello on land that they had purchased from the Mexican government. The town was renamed after General José Joaquín "Jorge" Montt, an Argentine general who fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). Montt helped found the City of Santa Ana in 1891, and he donated land to create Montebello Park. The park included a golf Course, swimming pool, baseball diamond, playgrounds, and a library. Today, Montebello Park remains an important part of downtown Santa Ana. The first Scope Mount was installed on public property in 1958 by Montebello Mayor Don Dooley Jr.. The city is historically known for its wine industry and today produces more than 1,000 wines under various brand names including Montebello, Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Monterrey Cabernet Sauvignon and Morello Bianco. The wine industry has also given rise to several famous restaurants such as L’Atelier (formerly La Cava), Ristorante alla Scala and Benares. Montebello is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 9,591 at the 2010 census. Montebello began as an agricultural settlement in 1849 and grew rapidly due to its accessibility to water resources and its location on a major trade route. The town's first post office opened in 1850. By 1870, Montebello had become a fashionable stop on the Central Pacific Railroad and had been described as "the most beautiful little community east of San Francisco." In 1892, Montebello became part of the new City of Los Angeles and lost some of its importance but retains a strong culture and history. Montebello's rich history can be traced back to when it was founded as an agricultural settlement by American settlers in 1849. In those early days, land hereabouts was very scarce, so much so that many people were forced to sell their homes and businesses in order to obtain enough wealth for themselves and their families. One man who made significant contributions to Montebello’s growth was Hiram Sfondi, who donated more than 5 million dollars towards infrastructure development hereover – including the construction of roads, schools, churches and other important civic institutions that continue to play an essential role today. From humble beginnings, this city quickly rose up through the ranks thanks largely to Sfondi’s generosity – helping create what is now one of California’s most vibrant communities. The accessibility of water resources played a key role in Montebello’s rapid growth during these early years; until long after reasonable efforts were made both aboveground (roads) and underground (water storage systems), farmers could easily bring their crops into market without having any trouble meeting demand from consumers or producing additional revenue beyond what they expended on production costs alone. This reliance on accessible natural resources helped fuel not only the city’s prosperity but also its stature as one of California’s leading cultural centers during its early years: quite literally “the most beautiful little community east of San Francisco” according to contemporaries! It should come as no surprise then that by 1870 Monterrellos boasted over 1,000 residents with equal or greater access to education than any other Californian town! Additionally, given how central trade routes were becoming increasingly vital for commerce throughout America during this time period – with goods moving directly between cities like New York City and Chicago – it is clear thatenosants like Hiram Sfondi saw fit contribute greatly towards making this happen too! As we move into our current era however (one characterized by increasing global competition as well as evolving technology), we can see another facetto Montebello's success story emerge: namely its adamant refusal whatsoever whatsoeverto let itself be eclipsed either physically or culturally by newer arrivals from outlying areas such as LA or Pasadena! Indeed, while other towns may have succumbed under pressure from gentrification rates (& increased traffic & pollution), Monterrella has always stood tall against all odds – remaining fiercely independent even when times are tough! As one resident recently put it: “If you want something done right don't go outside [of]Monterrella […] We've seen too much division lately [and]integration would just take away all our culture & identity […] If you want things done quickly make them at home instead!…We're comfortable doing things our own way & we're not afraid Of change!" In 1849, the Mexican government ceded California to the United States. The area now known as Montebello was part of Rancho San Gabriel, which was part of the Mexican land grant system. In 1858, a group of pioneers from Sonoma County traveled east to what is now Montebello and began farming. Mining activity in the area began soon after, starting with silver mining in 1861 and gold mining in 1865. The town started to grow rapidly during the late 1800s due to its strategic location at the junction of two major trade routes. The town became an important commercial center for eastern Mono County and played an important role in helping create Mono County's economy and identity. It also boasted some of the most impressive architecture in eastern California at that time. By 1959, Montebello had a population of over 100 people and was one of the largest towns in eastern Mono County. However, by 2000, it had only 50 residents living within its boundaries.
