In 1942, during World War II, parts of Montebello were heavily bombed by Japanese planes while other sections were spared because they lay in central business districts such as downtown San Francisco and Ghirardelli Square in Nob Hill. During 1945–46 many homes were destroyed or damaged by fire caused by incendiary bombs dropped over Japan during World War II; many residents rebuilt their homes after the war ended with help from local contractor Don Simonsen and his team who designed innovative methods for overcoming fire problems in postwar buildings including use of precast concrete panels instead of traditional wood framing and pre-stressed metal roofing techniques first used on modern skyscrapers such as The Sears Tower in Chicago – all lasting into the 21st century. During 1951–1960s much development took place within several miles east around Highway 238 about 2 miles north of present day downtown Montebello; this included erection of numerous high rise buildings now known collectively as "The Towers" including: The Park Tower (now known as 555 Market Street), Embassy Row (), Pacific Gas & Electric Building (now known as PG&E) Tower (now also known locally simply as "The Towers"), Adolphus Howe Oil Refinery Building () and Chevron gas station building (). These developments are generally considered to be synonymous with downtown Montebello although there are several sites which are not associated with any specific development period or architecture: at least two blocks north between First Street/Market Street and Second Avenue/Park Drive - now occupied by Mail Stop Supermarket - was once home to Bechtel Corp., then Kaiser Aluminum Co., before it reverted to open space following major construction projects between 1958 and 1965 which removed most obstructions beneath First Street including extensive rebuilding project removing more than 1 million cubic feet (~27 metric tons) worth Of demolition materialOperation began November 15 1957 under directionof Mayor Richardson
