In recent years there have been several major development projects announced for Montebello: a new sports complex called "Granite Park" which will include a football stadium/field house as well as an ice rink; a $100 million project to improve transportation infrastructure; and plans for up to 20 new high-end apartments developments on vacant land near Interstate 5 just east of downtown – all part of what is known as "The Downtown Project."
Montebello was first settled in 1849 by the Myrtles and ran for over a century until it merged with other settlements to form what is now Riverside County. The town was located on the Southern Pacific Railroad, which linked Los Angeles with San Francisco. The post office called Montebello from 1857-1864 and 1865-1867. In 1875, the railroad bypassed Montebello and built Railroad Avenue instead, which led to increased traffic as people drove to Arroyo Grande or points east for agriculture and ranching purposes.
