Today's downtown area still preserves much of Antonio Lomas' original architecture including his elegant two-story adobe buildings which date back to 1854-55 when he first established himself as one of Northern California's leadingtannery entrepreneurs. These structures were abandoned following his death in 1862 but were resurrected after Measure HH (1912), which renamed downtown Montebello after him alsoadsored development along Main Street between Second Street and Third Street giving it its present appearance today. In 1984, Montebello annexed part of El Sobrante village to create a new borough that would have jurisdiction over all but one street within both villages - creating what is now known as Monterey Park Borough .
