Gun Parts History in Montebello, California began with the first firearms in 1868. The rifles and shotguns used by the American Civil War were made of solid wood and were very delicate instruments. To keep them safe, most of these guns were carried unloaded in dark storage areas. In 1875, a group of men from San Francisco decided to start a trade school for gunsmiths. They named the school “The Gunnery School” after their new venture. In 1895, a man by the name of J.B. Lidell started making cannons at his home on Montebello Avenue in Montebello. He was soon joined by his son John Lidell Jr., who continued to make cannons until 1907 when he moved to El Sobrante County and formed his own company, John Lidell & Sons Cannon Company Incorporated (later renamed JBL). This company manufactured artillery and mortar pieces for both World War I and World War II, as well as pistols and revolvers. The munitions plant on Montebello Road closed down in 1957 but parts still remain there today!

Montebello was founded in 1823 by Captain Jedediah Smith and his companions as a small stage stop on the Santa Fe Trail. By 1850, the town had grown to more than 100 residents and had become a important center for General store trade, cattle drives, and Native American commerce. In 1854, Montebello became the site of California's first election when James K. Polk was elected governor. The community continued to grow until it reached its peak around 1800 people. However, with the gold rush starting in 1859, Montebello quickly declined and by 1870 only had about 50 residents remaining. Despite this decline, however, Montebello has been included in various lists of America's "most civilized" towns.
The Montebello area was first settled in 1847 by the Moreno brothers, who named their land Monterey. The settlers weremostly Mexican Americans, and they began to establish businesses and raise crops. In 1857, a group of English investors came to California and became interested in the timber business. They decided to move into the area and started a mill at what is now called Montebello. The mill produced lumber for local buildings and furniture until it closed in 1898. In 1906, the United States acquired portions of Mexico from Spain as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As part of this deal, the US extended citizenship to all Mexican nationals living within its borders. This resulted in an influx of new Mexicans into Montebello and other areas around Los Angeles County. Many of these newcomers founded businesses or bought property here because they believed that California would be their new home. The arrival of many Spanish-speaking Latinos also created tensions among different groups in Montebello. Some immigrants felt that they had been taken advantage of by American businessmen; others saw the newcomers as a burden on already struggling families. However, over time these differences faded away as people got to know each other better and realized that they shared some common interests. In 1980, Montebello experienced its most significant development when two hospitals opened up here: one focused on medical care for patients with brain tumors and another providing general hospital care for residents from all over Southern California. These hospitals soon became world-renowned prompting questions about how such comprehensive services could be provided without taking away from more important priorities at local hospitals like Stonington Memorial Hospital (now known as USC Medical Center) which was then only servingMontebello residents outlying neighborhoods
