Montebello is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. It is located on the east side of the Bay Bridge and about 12 miles north of San Francisco. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The name Montebello comes from Spanish for "mountain peak." The peak was originally called Monterey and then, until it was renamed after General José Joaquín de la Peña y Angrebre, Don Felipe III's brother-in-law. In 1821, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, Monterey became part of Mexican soil and its name changed to Santiago de Monterrey. In 1872, John Edward Smith founded an agricultural colony near the top of Montebello mountain known as Redwood Valley. Smith named his settlement Albion because many white oak trees were found there. The community grew quickly due to its location surrounded by fertile land suitable for agriculture and its water supply from underground reservoirs provided by the mountain range which forms the eastern edge of Montebello township. By 1889, over 1,500 people had settled in Albion and it became one of California's most populous towns with a population over 10,000 before World War II began to shrink that number somewhat due to emigration to other states during that time period; however Albion remains one of California's fastest growing communities today with a population over 11,000 as of 2018 according to the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey

Montebello is a small city located in Northern California, about an hour's drive from the Bay Area. The population was 20,000 at the 2010 census. Montebello is named after Spanish explorer and general Antonio de Monterey y Costilla, who explored the area in 1824. The town was founded on May 12, 1849 byCaptain John C. Fremont and his men as a military outpost on Rancho San Jose (now part of Montebello) following their exploration of northern California during the 1850s. The first post office opened in 1851. In 1861, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in what is now Sacramento County and early settlers began to arrive to prospect for ore inside and around Montebello. On November 3, 1862, US President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the Homestead Act which allowed foreigners to purchase land near Sacramento City for $1 per acre. In 1865, when Californian Senator John Prentice Hays became Speaker of the House of Representatives he organized a committee which recommended that Montebello be made a separate municipality within Sacramento County with its own government but this idea was not picked up by local officials until 1870 when they formed a temporary board to consider it further. On February 14, 1872 General James Waddell surrendered Santa Clara Valley to Mexican forces at Adobe Walls; this event set off a three year conflict that ended with Mexican defeat at Buena Vista on July 26th 1874 resulting in over 50 Ulysses S Grant’s Medals of Honor being awarded including one to Captain Fremont who received two citations for gallantry above and beyond the call of duty while commanding Company K 9th California Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the engagement). After Buena Vista Santa Clara Valley reverted back to Mexican hands so once again Anglo settlers were looking for new land north of Sacramento City limits which led them to found Ipswich Township opposite present day Montebello also called North Rodeo Avenue today because it had been part of Mexico prior to American occupation In 1880 Pomona resulted from an Indian war fought between white miners and Paiute Indians over claim rights for copper mines nearby; approximately 350 people died as a result including many women and children who were abducted by Native Americans during fighting. This event has been criticized by some historians as one of history's most brutal massacres.Goudreau Pomona remained an unincorporated community until it merged with neighboring Unincorporated Settlement District #2 on January 1st 1912.< ref name="/wiki/Pomona">Wade Goudreau - "Unsolved Mysteries: Pomona" . Additionally there have been numerous allegations made against various individuals within both communities related to sexual assault or other unethical behavior particularly towards female residents (for example Tom Buchanan served twice consecutively as Mayor of Pomona before being impeached in 2006).< ref />
Montebello became a town in 1851 and was platted in 1853. The first post office opened in Montebello on April 12, 1853. The name of the town was changed to Montebello in 1907. The city of Montebello was incorporated as a city on November 15, 1923. On December 1, 1951, the city of Montebello annexed the neighboring towns of Newhall and Holland Park.
