Montebello is a census-designated place in Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is located east of Yosemite National Park and south of Aspen. The community began as two small settlements, Bellagio and Villa del Buey, on the highest peak in Inyo County: Mount Whitney. The first post office was established in 1879. On February 17th 1922 a fire destroyed most of the townsite buildings and killed four people; as a result of this event development decisions were made to rebuild larger structures on more stabilized ground adjacent to water sources for future fire protection purposes only - no housing was ever built in these rebuilt buildings due to concerns about potential fire outbreaks from nearby fires which could potentially cause extensive damage if started by mistake or accidental ignition (a concern that persists even today). In 1970 residents voted not to annex either San Bernardino Mountains (to the east) or Mono Lake (to the west) after deciding that they would rather remain separate municipalities with their own police departments and schools than amalgamate with other communities already affected by surface-level flooding caused by heavy rains associated with El Niño events throughout much Southern California during 1971-1972 despite pleas from planners who felt that such flooding could preclude much needed resort development near Mono Lake while also threatening residential areas near various water supplies essential for life without irrigation systems essential for agricultural production including groundwater recharge sites essential for many decades prior thereto]. This led to race riots throughout Southern California that year including at Montebello where whites ejected black citizens from their homes and businesses as revenge for being freed from slavery. In 1865 white supremacists started a race riot in Oakland that killed forty-six African Americans while soldiers deployed across Southern California looked on passively. In 1868 Jesse Owens won a gold medal at the Berlin Olympics helping spur racial integration into American sports venues around this time including baseballs used in professional games beginning in 1863 were made available for sale to people of color starting with Negro League teams playing exhibition games against each other before Home plate umpires had any say regardless of whether these home run races were fair or not as they had been prior to white power control over baseballs owned by some wealthy men who could afford expensive equipment while others could not field teams because they lacked fields or money necessary for investment also controlling major league rosters through boycotts during this time period ticket prices continued high making it difficult for people like Owens and many others including fellow Olympians James Baldwin and Martin Luther King Jr.)to perform at air shows large scale events such as national elections held after World War II when racially segregated stadiums became available
In 1866, the Palomino Ranch was established on Montebello Creek in what is now Montebello. The ranch was first owned by José Vasquez and his brother Francisco Vasquez. In 1876, Fremont signed a treaty with the Apache Native Americans which ceded all of central California to them in return for goods and land. The area that is now Montebello became part of the Apache reservation after this treaty was signed. In 1927, when California became an autonomous state, Montebello was given its own city charter which lasted until 1945. The city served as a junction between Fresno and Los Angeles until 1967 when both cities were merged into one larger municipality under the name of Los Angeles County. Since then, there have been many changes to Montebello's cultural landscape including multiple waves of immigrants coming to the area over the years; some making significant contributions while others did not make much impact. Today, Montebello is a mixture of Spanish-speaking and American-born residents with a strong presence from within Mexico as well as people from around the world who have made their homes here over time.
