Montebello, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It is located about an hour and a half drive east of Sacramento. The population was 1,500 at the 2010 census, down from 2,000 at the 2000 census. Montebello has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two centuries and was founded on July 4, 1800 by Juan Manuel de la Hoz as a trading post between Mexico City and San Francisco Bay. In 1853 it became part of Nevada Territory when that state was created from parts of California and Oregon. The town's first school opened in 1868. In 1876 it became part of Imperial County when that county was created from portions of Contra Costa and Alameda counties. In 1928 it became a city when it joined the metropolitan area formed by Sacramento and Anaheim. Montebello experienced significant growth during World War II as the home to many military personnel stationed in or near the valley because of its strategic location at the junction of several major highways. After 1945, however, economic development slowed as suburban housing prices rose while job opportunities dwindled in what had once been one of the most racially diverse cities in America. Today Montebello remains a bedroom community with active businesses serving its residents commuting into larger cities such as Sacramento or Redding along Interstate 5 or Highway 99
Montebello, California was founded in 1847 by James Irvine and his brother John who named it for Mount Diablo, the location of their previous ranch. The two brothers also founded a school in Montebello. In 1851, they started a woolen mill and in 1861, they started a flour mill. The town developed around these two mills until the opening of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1869 brought new industry to Montebello. Today, Montebello is a primarily residential community with a small commercial district.
