Montclair, California is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 23,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Montclair's early history can be traced back to 1853 when three men from Montclair named James Wolkowsky, John Sutter and Augustus Chatham arrived on horseback from Illinois. They set up a near-by farmstead and began trading goods with nearby farmers. In 1857, two brothers named John Fenton and Samuel Morse opened a store in Montclair which became one of the most successful businesses in the town. In 1865, an agreement was made between the Fenton brothers and George Stephenson - then owner of a series of mills in neighboring Wilmington - to build a railroad through Montclair and provide employment for its citizens. The first train passed through Montbridge on November 5th, 1865; it carried lumber brought by locomotive No. 8 from Stockton to Mr. Stephenson’s plant at Newark Junction (now North Beach). The townspeople erected their first schoolhouse in 1870; it served as both a public library and meeting room until 1925 when it was replaced by the current structure which still stands today. In 1902,montgomery station was built on Railroad Avenue adjacent to what is now City Hall; this stop served as the only passenger stop on the now-defunct Santa Clara Valley Railroad before it went bankrupt in 1912. A new shopping center was developed along Railroad Avenue between J Street and Maple Street in 1984 following passage of Measure T which allowed for development around commercial corridors within city limits without special permits or zoning approval being necessary

Montclair is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 53,471 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Francisco County after San Francisco. Montclair sits on a narrow peninsula between the Richmond and Golden Gate rivers. The Montclair section of town was originally settled by peasants who came overland from China in the 1840s to escape serfdom. The first post office was established in 1851 and named for Colonel James Waddell Montague (1792-1875). The first store opened in 1853, and the first school was built in 1855. In 1906 a group of investors led by George Eastman founded what would become Kodak, which employed many of Montclair's early businessmen including J. P. Morgan and Alfred Sloan. During World War II, Kodak moved its headquarters from Rochester, New York to Montclair because it could not find local suppliers willing to produce goods for the war effort due to antitrust charges against Allied companies such as General Motors and Chrysler. Montclair became an incorporated city on December 15, 1909 following approval by voters via referendum passed two days earlier with only a few abstentions; at that time it had a population of 3 unincorporated neighborhoods located within its limits: Northfield Heights (southwest corner of First Avenue and Prospect Street), Westmont (northwest corner of Second Avenue and Lafayette Street), and Cliffsides (east side of Third Avenue near Academy Street). In 1910–1911 there were also two attempts unsuccessfully to establish villages within City Limits--the earliest Census Data indicates that these efforts did not gain traction until well into 1920; however their existence does suggest some level of planning or interest on part of City fathers prior to incorporation proceedings occurring In 1922 restrictions placed upon further growth withinCity Limits were lifted effective July 1 following voter approval through special election held pursuant to then-City Manager Harry Ament's ordinance; this resulted in an overwhelming majority (>60%) for annexation by South Beach Township which annexed all but one block eastward from First Avenue between Fourth Street/Lake Merced Boulevard & Shoreline Drive; this included portions now known as Downtown Montclair including much acreage formerly annexed by Northfield Heights & Westmont before their separation from City Limits . After annexation South Beach Township changed its name back to Montclair on November 12th 1933 after annexing much larger portion extending northeasterly past Park Boulevard onto Union Pacific Railroad tracks eastward along current Lake Merced Boulevard & I-280 before joining up with other portions now part of Downtown El Sobrante* *El Sobrante includes much acreage formerly annexed by Northfield Heights & Westmont before their separation from City Limits
