Montclair is a small town in Alameda County, California. It was founded in 1876 by farmers who left the then-rural area of Contra Costa County to settle in what is now Montclair. The population was 24,000 when it incorporated as a city in 1909. In 1916, Montclair became the first U.S. city to enact an anti-naming ordinance, which forbade its citizens from using words that had been coined or used by another person or place. The ordinance was repealed in 1922 after public outcry over the name of nearby Oakland's new City Hall. Montclair's rich history dates back to its early days as a rural community inhabited only by farmers and their families. A number of items associated with this period are still found in Montclair: such as the remains of a log cabin that once stood on the town square; pioneer tools and equipment dating from the 1800s; and pieces of furniture and other household items that have been recovered from former residences in recent years. During World War II, Montclair played an important role within Navy Base San Francisco as both a manufacturing center for munitions production and as a strategic location for air defense against Japanese forces during the war's early stages. After 1945, however, economic decline took hold in Montclair and many residents moved away while crime rates increased throughout the city periphery (which included portions of East Oakland). In1993 Mayor Donny Broyles announced his candidacy for mayor of Alameda County and won election against incumbent Barbara Lee - one of only two women elected to serve on Alameda County's Board of Supervisors at that time (the other being Dianne Feinstein). In 2000, following passage of Proposition 209 - which limited voting rights to people who were citizens or permanent residentsof California - Montclair erupted into violence between young Latinos living within its borders and English-speaking white Residents seeking access to education opportunities available only to Anglo-Saxon Californians outside those boundaries. As part of an effort by local officials led by Broyles to address this issue, violence against Latinos began decreasingly throughout2001 until eventually culminating with a April 2002 shootout between police officers working undercover inside Mexico National Airlines Flight 990 en route from Los Angeles International Airport to Fresno Municipal Airport near Yosemite National Park after passengers reported seeing suspicious behavior aboard the plane

The original town site was near the modern-day intersection of Raymond and Montgomery avenues. The name "Montclair" is derived from the word "monterey," which means "the headland." The first post office in Montclair was established on December 20, 1876. It was named for George Montague, who donated land to the town. The first store in Montclair opened its doors on January 1, 1877. The store's owner was Amos J. Condon. The town's first school was built in 1879 and it served as the primary school for all of Alameda County until 1906 when it became part of Oakland Unified School Districts. In 1907, Montclair voters passed a resolution authorizing the construction of a high school campus within the town limits that would become known as Eastmont High School. Construction began in 1908 and finished in 1911; Eastmont became one of the first schools in Contra Costa County to be funded through local taxes rather than state funding. The population of Montclair grew rapidly during World War I due to military recruitment; by 1917, there were over 100 residents living in what is now called Downtown Montclair with an additional 30 or so residing outside of its boundaries on Raymond Avenue and eastward along Montgomery Boulevard/High Street
