In 1912,montgomery Ward opened its third store in downtown Montclair. The company became one of America’s largest department stores with over 100 stores throughout North America by 1916. After World War I ended hostilities and there were no new wars fought for several years, business declined; however, it did pick up somewhat during Prohibition between 1919-1921. After prohibition ended many businesses closed down including Montgomery Ward but it reopened shortly afterwards as a general store with more subdued colors and limited merchandising selections until 1957 when it became an anchor tenant at then newly built Jack London Square shopping center on Telegraph Avenue near Center Street. That same year saw also the opening of two other powerful retail anchors: Kress & Company (a clothing retailer) and Sears Roebuck & Co., becoming two of North America’s oldest department stores still existing today (seventy-one years!). There have been numerous changes to this small town since its founding: major renovations took place during World War II (1942-1945), followed by another decade during which little happened except for population growth that accelerated following the demonetization of cash in 1986 which led to reductions in government funding for schools districts throughout Northern California resulting in shrinking populations across all communities due largely to loss of jobs within those districts; however much has remained constant such as ZIP code boundaries 04609 being unchanged since 1967! Today's community is anchored around three main areas: downtown where Arts District restaurants abound along with movie theaters - both older cinemas still exist today - as well as several high end boutiques/stores along Telegraph Avenue near Woodward Avenue; Oneonta Road commercial corridor serving primarily agricultural employment; and smaller streets surrounding these core areas characterized by their mix of housing types from starter homes through apartments/condos throughprofessional properties culminating in large single family detached homes known locally as 'Pinehurst'.

Montclair's history dates back to 1847 when it was founded as a small agricultural town east of Oakland by brothers Isaac and Samuel Morse. In 1872, they merged with neighboring Dublin to form what became known as East Montclair primarily because of their shared Irish heritage. The name was changed to Montclair in 1907 after merging with other nearby towns. In 1922, Montclair voters passed a bond issue for public works projects such as widening streets and creating new parks. This led to the nickname "The City That Works." In 1924, during World War II, the City fathers built an air-raid shelter on Manchester Avenue in order to protect residents from potential bombing raids by Japan. In 1949, construction began on Interstate 80 through Montclair which soon became one of North America's firstInterstates. The $22 million project included two expressways - I-80/Eastmont Boulevard and I-280/Westmont Boulevard - which connected Newark and Albany within minutes' walk of each other. Montclair experienced rapid growth following I-80's opening in 1989; the city annexed adjacent communities including Hackensack (in 1998), Midwood (in 2002), South Side (in 2006), Clifton Park (in 2009) and parts of Pleasanton (in 2013). However, some residents expressed concern about increasing traffic congestion on I-880 and lack of quality public transportation options due to limited space for expansion or renovation of existing facilities; this criticism helped contribute to Montellaro voters narrowly approving Measure Q2—a referendum seeking funds for a bike share program—over rival Measure R1 in November 2017
