Montclair was founded in 1853 by immigrant Swiss people who were working on a wagon train to California. The first post office in Montclair opened in 1857. In 1875, the town became an incorporated municipality and it has since grown into one of the most ethnically diverse towns in America with over 60 different languages spoken within its borders. The area that now makes up Montclair was first inhabited by Native Americans as early as 10,000 BC. By 1800, there were about 20 villages and missions existing along what is now Interstate 80 between Contra Costa and Alameda counties. The first European settlers arrived around 1847 when Samuel Barrett purchased 4 acres (1 ha) of land east of downtown Montclair for $200 from Ali Baba and Forty Thieves owner John Sutter. Barrett built a small cabin called "Barrett's Butte" on the site which still stands today. In 1850, he sold additional land to George Hearst for $2 per acre ($10/ha). Montclair was founded in 1876 by James W. Montclair and his wife, Sarah Ann. The town was named for Colonel Edward Montclair, a United States Army officer who had served in the Mexican-American War and who later became a land speculator. The first post office opened in 1877. In 1879, the Montclairs donated land to establish a public school district. The school district rapidly grew and soon had several schools, a library, and a cotton gin. In 1903, the community added an amusement park to its offerings. In 1909, the Montclair Male Industrial School opened as the first high school for boys in California. It remained open until 1949. In 1916,montclair annexed neighboring communities of Glassboro and Hackensack to form what is now known as East Newark Township; glasshouses from these towns still stand today on Seminary Road near the intersection of Park Avenue and Route 9A
