Montclair, California is a small city located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California. It was founded by the brothers Charles and Jesse Montclair in 1876. The city has been called "the Gadget City" because of its many innovative devices such as electric lights and streetcars. In 1916, Montclair passed an ordinance that required handgun carry permits for all citizens over the age of 21. In response to the Montclair shootings in February 2019 which killed six people and injured 11, Mayor Al Goldstein announced plans to make Montclair one of the most gun-friendly cities in America. This will be done by expanding concealed carry rights for citizens and creating more gun stores within the city limits.

In 1856, Augustus Kelley purchased land southeast of present day Montclair Village from Captain Atherton for $1,000USD Kelley started a small trading post called "The Grapes" which served as a halfway point between Sacramento and Chicago before he relocated his business headquarters to what is now downtown Montclair. By 1870, Kelley had formed an agricultural company that became known as The Kelley-Lodge Company and began producing grapes for export. In 1876, John Sutter founded Sutter Farms in Red Bluff just south of Stockton and sold his grapes to The Kelley-Lodge Company until 1888 when he moved them upriver to where they are still grown today under the current name Sutter American Grapes Corporation. In 1916, The Grapes Manufacturing Company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Co., creating one of America's leading firearms manufacturers In 1949, Raymond Harkness founded Harkness Paper Products followed by Harkness Paper Chemicals & Fibers which became part of Dow Corning after their merger in 1957 Dow Corning merged with Allied Signal in 1998 which created Northrop Grumman AG Montclair then passed through several ownership changes but has always been home to some of America's most distinguished businesses including IBM World Headquarters (opened 1969), Intel Inside (1996), Mastercard USA (2000), State Farm Insurance (2002) and Salesforce (2005). Montclair was founded in 1849 by John Montclair and his wife, Harriet. The town became a center of Calumet County during the California Gold Rush because of its rich minerals and its location on the Pacific Ocean. The first post office in Montclair opened in 1850. In 1862, Montclair fever broke out and killed over 100 people, including many prominent citizens. The town rebuilt quickly, however, thanks to donations from local businesses and citizens. During World War II, the United States Navy built a naval airfield in Montclair for use by Royal Air Force fighter planes stationed at Los Angeles International Airport. The airfield was used until 1962 when it was sold to Kaiser Aluminum Industries. In the 1990s and 2000s, Montclair experienced growth as an upscale community with many high-end shops and restaurants. Recently, the area has seen some revitalization with new development such as a new tennis court and movie theater complex called Regal Cinemas across from Central Park.
