The name "Montclair" originated with General James Montague who led an expedition against the Native Americans in 1776. The first post office was established in 1851, and the first store opened in 1853. The town site was surveyed by Captain John Sutter and named for him after his birthplace in England where he had been born in 1768. It wasn't until 1861 that the name "Montclair" was given to a entire township which included present-day Oakland and much of Berkeley Township including most of what is now Eastmont Avenue and much of what is now Hayward Street. At this time Dearborn Heights also lay within present-day Oakland boundaries In 1870, Montclair's first school opened; it eventually became known asOakland High School but closed during World War II because of wartime bombing raids onOakland which destroyed many homes along with schools and other infrastructure. In 1951, Montclair's only hospital opened due to increased enrollment at nearby San Francisco State University which then offered free medical care to students living on campus.
