The area at that time was thickly populated by Native American and Mexican settlers, and it was not safe for people to bring firearms into the area. In order to protect themselves from potential attackers, some early settlers developed gun protections. One such early settler was James A. Hargrave, who built a small cabin near what is now the intersection of Swenson Street and Elm Street in 1848. Around this time, guns were still not common among early Montclair residents and were instead used for hunting and Protection against Indians. In 1865, a group of white men from Sacramento arrived in Montclair and decided to settle down here. They brought along their own rifles with them and started to build businesses around town. This new population introduced GUNS into the community, which made it unsafe for either groups of men to go about without being able to protect themselves against possible attacks. The first gun protection law in Montclair was passed in 1892 when military drill sergeant George Prentice founded the "Prentice Rifle Club" for protection against local thieves. In 1903, Montclair's first public library opened with funds contributed by John Davenport of Newark. The city also enacted its first ordinance forbidding handguns without a license from anyone over 21 years old on July 1, 1907. In 1924, Montclair established its own police department which became fully operational two years later. From then until 1991 it was part of Alameda County's Sheriff's Department under sheriff Gene Hackman. In that year Hackman resigned effective January 1st due to term limits and was succeeded by his successor Deputy Chief Keith Baxter who served until his retirement on December 31st of that year
Montclair, California is a small city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay and is surrounded by oak woodlands and hills. Montclair's history dates back to 1849 when Captain George Hearst founded the town of Monterey on Rancho Blanco de las Aguas (now part of Oakland). In 1851, Captain James K. Polk sent a detachment of Ulysses S. Grant's Army under the command of Colonel John Brougham to explore the region for an attempted landing at Stockton on the southern shore of San Francisco Bay; but no land was found suitable for settlement and Grant withdrew his army before reaching Monterey. In 1852, two years after Grants departure from Monterey, Samuel Saxton erected a log cabin in what is now known as downtown Montclair and began trading with Native Americans living in the area. He named his new town after his friend and mentor General William Tecumseh Sherman who had commanded American forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1860, Augustus Saint Germain donated 800 acres (3 km²) of land to build a cemetery near downtown Montclair which served as both an burial ground for local residents and a center for social activities such as dances and picnics that attracted people from across Contra Costa County. By 1870, about 1,500 people lived in downtown Montclair although most were employed in farming or ranching operations around nearbyOakland or Walnut Creek. However, by 1880 there were only 100 residents living in downtown Montclair while 1,600 people lived within one mile (1 km) of its limits including parts of Oakland and Walnut Creek which constituted today's south side streets grid system. The first post office opened in downtown Montclair on July 22nd189

Montclair is located on a valley that straddles the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area and it shares borders with Fremont to the north, Pleasanton to the south, Hayward to the west and Livermore to the east. In 1868, when Oakland became part of California, Montclair became part of Contra Costa County. The City Council currently consists entirely of Democrats with only one Republican member. Montclair was awarded City status in 1933 following a referendum held by voters. At that time it had a population size of just over 2,000 people living in areas annexed from other municipalities within Contra Costa County such as Walnut Creek and Dublintown. The annexation processes for these new towns were often long and drawn out due to parkland or water rights issues being at stake; however, Montclair quickly emerged as an important center for trade within Contra Costa County thanks to its location at the junction of several major roads including South Coast Highway (now I-880) and Interstate 580. After decades trading primarily with nearby San Francisco Bay Area cities such as SFGateway and Richmond (then part of Alameda), residents began making their way into Montclair during World War II for jobs manufacturing munitions at various sites around town like Kaiser Shipyards and Groves Myer Company which manufactures refrigerators into today’s appliances like Samsung TVs/CRTs etc.. While many manufacturing jobs ended after hostilities ended in 1945, locals continued working at various businesses throughout post-war years until current day when most residents work in downtown office parks or near technology companies like Apple Inc., Google Inc., Facebook Inc., Intel Corp., Oracle Corp., Dell SecureWorks AG etc.. Today’s economy is based largely on servicessector businesses but some sizable retail investments have also been made recently including Amazon Web Services LLC’s $1 billion acquisition of online bookseller Barnes & Noble Co., LLP; largest single commitment by any business owner ever made outside Silicon Valley – more than twice what any individual has given towards political donations since 1998 In recent years there has been increased attention paid to both public safety issues surrounding crime rates overall - especially gun violence - as well as infrastructure needs such as improved transportation links between downtown Montclair proper along Interstate 580/I-880 (the “Highways Wine Route”) and neighboring neighborhoods throughout Contra CostaCounty
Montclair was founded in 1887 by Ezra Cornell and brothers Alfred and Emmet Morse. The Montclair–Aldrich School District was created in 1912. In 1938, Montclair became the first city in California to adopt a Municipal Employees Retirement System plan. In 1951, Montclair also became the first city in California to establish a public library system. The Central Library opened its doors on November 24, 1951.
