Montclair, California is a city in Alameda County, California. It was incorporated on December 3, 1853. The population was 21,452 at the 2010 census. The Montclair Arsenal was built in 1854 by Major George Armstrong Custer as part of the Army's Second Military District. It served as a gunnery and training ground for recruits and officers alike until it closed its doors in 1917. Today, only the ruins remain of what once was one of America's most important arsenal complexes. One of the many reasons Montclair has remained an ammunition production center since before World War II is its location on both sides of Hwy 101 between Oakland and Berkeley. Ammunition always been an important part of American society and economy; small towns like Montclair have turned this into a major industry with over 100 businesses now manufacturing rounds for various firearms including rifles, shotguns, pistols and machine guns. In addition to ammunition production, other businesses located in Montclair include ITT Corporation (now IBM), which started out as a typewriter company in 1922 and remains headquartered here today; ArcelorMittal AG (formerly UGL Steel) - one of Europe's largest steel companies - which began operations here back in 1903; Alpine Cheese Company (founded by Jell-O founder Johnnie Greenfield); JBS Sourcing & Logistics Inc., a retailer/wholesaler that specializes in Bulk Orders from around the world; The Wellness Center Health Club - home to arguably America's first health club chain - opened its doors here back in 1986; and local attorney Don Harmon founded Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) here back in 1912 when he joined forces with fellow lawyer Harry Emerson Ferenczi to form Alcoa Aluminum Company Limited (later renamed GE).

The first Europeans to visit what is now Montclair were Juan Bautista de Anza on his mapping expedition of 1802-03 and Captain John Foust on his trip from San Francisco Bay in 1819. At that time there was no organized town or village within walking distance of each other. Early settlers were farmers who raised chickens, pigs, corn, wheat, beans and horses. A post office was established at Montclair in 1836; it was discontinued in 1861 because of lack of mail traffic. In 1881–82 two groups of men traveled through Alameda County searching for a route between Sacramento and Yosemite Valley. One group led by George Clements reached Montclair on July 11 (the day after Ulysses S Grant became President) while another led by Will Hutton arrived on July 26th but never reached their destination due to rugged terrain near Half Moon Lake. On October 15th 1886 John Doolittle flew over Emigrant Pass on his way between Los Angeles and San Francisco during his flight from New York City to Oakland Airport On this particular day he saw Mount Diablo in the distance behind him as he passed over Livermore Valley This event helped spur development around Mount Diablo as buyers started looking for land near mountainside communities such as Livermore Valley

Montclair was founded in 1852 as a trade and transportation center for farmers in what is now East Bay County. The name "Montclair" originates from its location near Mount Auburn on Montclair Hill, which overlooks downtown Oakland. The first post office in Montclair opened on November 15, 1852. The first settler in Montclair was George Fenton who purchased land east of what is now Market Street. By 1865, over $6000 had been spent to improve and patent new town squares and roads including Centre Street (later renamed Hastings Boulevard), Athol Avenue (later renamed Fruitvale Avenue), and Park Avenue (later renamed Peralta Parkway). By 1870, over $8000 had been spent on public works within the Town of Montclair including an extension of Tracks Railway to Alexander Road southeast of present-day Lake Merritt; a water main from Amherst Creek topresent-day Addison Road; light posts throughout village; grading of streets and building construction began with three blocks between High School Place and present-day Chestnut Street In 1872, two years after incorporation as a town by act of the state legislature under then-Governor John D'Arcy Griffin, territorial governor John Brougham granted voting rights to all male citizens above 21 years old regardless of race or color so that residents could participate in local government without fear of discrimination or intimidation by white supremacists or other frontier elements living beyond Pioneer Square who controlled certain sections of Alameda County at that time. That same year saw the opening despite protest from some members of the community's 1st Precinct which resided northeast across Livermore Valley along present day Interstate 80 where white settlers also enjoyed extensive resources undisturbed by black people who were engaged primarily in agriculture until 7 miles south along I-80 where black people worked mostly as slaves for local landowners until their emancipation following World War II when their own communities developed
