Montclair is a city in Contra Costa County, California, located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay. The population was 66,561 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Contra Costa County by area and has a population of over 100,000 people who live in its central business district. Montclair's history goes back to 1853 when it was founded as a small town on the Rancho Vallejo estate by five brothers: George Winton (1817-1895), John Fenton (1820-1902), Nathaniel Hawthorne (1825-1904), Moses Goldwyn (1828-1900) and Solomon Schechter (1800-1881). In 1859, after the death of their father, Solomon Schechter donated 640 acres of land for Montclair Village to be built on. The first store opened in 1863. In 1865, local rancher John Giannini offered to buy all of what are now Montclair Village from the Schechters for $5 per acre. Giannini developed this land into an agricultural community with fruit orchards and vineyards that continue to this day. The first post office in Montclair opened in 1865 and was called "Fruitvale". In 1872, a train stop named "Montclair" was added to the name during construction of Interstate 80; today's intersection of I-80 and Valley Boulevard is known as "Old Montclair" Pioneer Square. In 1888, grazier James Aitken donated 1/4 mile east of present day Willowbrook Avenue for use as an open space known as Aitken Park; it remains one of Montclair's most popular attractions today. via photo credit: City Hall Annex In 1907 Mayor Harry Bridges proposed amending Contra Costa County Charter §9 which would annex part of unincorporated Richmond Heights within Montclair Village limits making it possible for more people from outside Santa Clara County to settle within our village limits without having to leave their homes or communities – something that had been sorely lacking since before our founding! This amendment passed overwhelmingly with only two dissenting votes! We were excited about this new opportunity but soon realized that there was still much work ahead before we could truly become a “village” ourselves! However little did we know that just 10 years later we would be able to welcome over 2500 residents into our village boundaries!
