The founders of Oaksterdam University started their university business out of their homes while they were still residents of Oakland; this act led eventually to Oaksterdam University becoming one of America’s leadingprivate universities with campuses across five states: Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, New York City and Texas. Many world famous entrepreneurs have been born or raised here including Bill Gates and Warren Buffett; both men grew up within walking distance of each other in Berkeley Heights which also includes Regency Cinemas and Oracle Corporation Headquarters

Montclair is a city in Alameda County, California. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the population was 26,814. The Montclair community began in 1879 when two men named John and Charles Montclair settled on a land grant from Nicholas-Jacques Conte. In 1907, the city fathers renamed it "Montclair" after its location on the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and because they felt that New Jersey's namesake town could not be called "Newark." The city of Oakland had been located in Alameda County since 1852 and at one time included what is now downtown Oakland as well as much of south Oakland. However, following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake which destroyed many homes in both counties,Oakland was annexed by Montclair into Alameda County. In 1916, the City of Berkeley annexes portions of Newark to form a new city calledBerkeley Heights. This move removed most of eastern Contra Costa County from Oakland's municipal boundaries; however, Berkeley retained some civil rights properties within its borders includingmontclair which became part of their city limits upon incorporation into Berkeley. In 1951 voters passed an amendment to the City Charter making it an unincorporated area subject to mayoral control with no elections or referendums taking place within its borders; this power has remained with the Mayor since then (but without any formal status). The first election held under this charter took place on November 6th, 1951 with Harry Jaffe being elected Mayor over his opponent Floyd Bogan by a narrow margin of 1 vote (the City Manager at that time was Director Clarence English). Since then there have been several mayors who served terms totaling 5 years or less before being succeeded by their successors; these include: Dave Kapp (3 years), Rudy Fernandez (2 years), Galen Ruppersberger (2 years), Dianne Feinstein (1 year) and Richard Riordan (1 year). Most recently there has been former Controller Glen Caplin who was elected unanimously on April 14th 2014 to serve out his unexpired term until January 15th 2021 after serving 3 short terms as Mayor-Elect Dick Raymond resigned effective January 1st 2009 due to health concerns about running for re-election while he continued to serve as Controller/Clerk under predecessor Roy Roberts Jr.. During Richard Riordan's term as mayor-elect he announced plans to redevelop all but 4 blocks in central montclair into mixed use housing units known as "Riordan Tower". The redevelopment project is still ongoing according to press reports and should finalize sometime during 2019 or 2020
