Montclair, California is a small town in Alameda County, California. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Fremont. The Montclair name comes from two French words: "mont" meaning mountain and "claire" meaning clear waters or sky. The town was founded in 1872 by John Hendershot and his family as a farmstead on the top of Mount Clarendon, about south of Fremont. In 1916, Montclair incorporated as a city with a population of 3,200 people. The Montclair Manufacturing Company was founded in 1907 by James Fenton and it became one of the leading American manufacturers of toy cars and other vehicles until its bankruptcy in 1961. Other early businesses included Jardine's Pharmacy (later merged into CVS) which opened in 1903 and still operates as an independentlyowned convenience store today; Orchard Hardware; First National Bank; Ford/Chrysler dealership; Post Office (now known as Wells Fargo); Presbyterian Church (later called First Baptist Church). In 1969, Montclair began to experience rapid growth due to the opening of Interstate 580 between Hayward and Fremont. Many businesses relocated to establish themselves along I-580 including Jardine's Pharmacy which moved upriver from San Leandro into new space at 5555 Allendale Road near Trane Auto Parts before finally being shuttered in 2000 after many years inside an all-glass building on Ossington Avenue; Ford/Chrysler dealership closed down their entire line near I-580 Exit 133 after 50 years while other longstanding local businesses such as Orchard Hardware also grew along I-580 corridor over time including becoming anchor stores for larger malls such as Bayfair Center shopping mall prior to their closures later that decade;; First Baptist Church closed down its original church building on Ossington Avenue following 35 years serving worshipers there followed by several more apartment buildings built around it subsequent closures notables among them were Airstream RV Park across from Friedman's Pizza adjacent to then newly built Interstate 680 off exit 133A also adjacent now to Mohawk Casino & Resort - both developments having replaced much older housing when they occurred;; former Sears Tower site now home to Mira Mesa Hills High School & east side park estate complete with tennis courts & playground before eventually becoming mixed use development known locally as "The Village". Downtown business areas have experienced numerous reconstruction efforts over recent decades following fires that destroyed many structures including most notably Getty Center redevelopment project completed around 2006 which revived downtown area considerably while also causing significantCasino renovation projects taking place today - Sands Bethlehem SpaHotel opposite Monmouth Mall undergoing major remodeling & expansion presently resulting in approximately 10 restaurants occupying approximately 150,000 sq ft occupied resulting in first Mexican restaurant ever established within United States located therein (+ largest casino owned& operated outside Mexico) just north of old train station next door

Montclair is a town in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 27,569 at the 2010 census. Montclair is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Montclair were American Fur traders and Missionaries who arrived in 1821. They erected a small adobe trading post on an overlook overlooking the estuary of Hatteras River. A second post was built about 1825 and became known as "The Gables." In 1846 the United States acquired Rancho Rincon de las Salinas from Manuel Nieto and David Ortiz for $500,000. This grant included land that forms today's Montclair borough - including much of what is now downtown - as well as parts of East Palo Alto, Willow Glen, Hercules Heights, South Fremont and North Fremont streets. In 1870 James Irvine bought Rancho Rincon de las Salinas from Manuel Nieto for $2 million; he named it after his father-in-law Don José de la Cueva y Peña y Costilla (1768–1845), Spanish governor of Californias during the Mexican Period who had purchased portions of Rancho San Antonio Rey de Anza southeast of present day Sacramento from Spanish explorer Gabriel García Márquez y Ulloa on October 21st 1776). The city sprouted up around this time with nearly 100 residences called Irvine House (now part of UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business), which still stands today on 6th Street NE between Irving Street and Nimitz Boulevard NW. It wasn't until 1888 when Mayor John Montgomery started developing plans to make Montclair one of America's leading cities by annexing nearby Newark Hills and creating a new city hall district; this would eventually become Downtown Newark with its own City Hall Annexation Plan filed in 1902 but never acted upon due to opposition from many within the community over its annexation into Newark Hills without their consent or notification (including some high ranking government officials). However, these protests did not stop Montgomery from pushing through his proposal; on January 24th 1904 he submitted to Mayor George Norris a bill ordering all local governments within Alameda County to merge into one entity known as "Montclair" under certain conditions - including providing funding for infrastructure projects such as better transportation links between the old communities and downtown Newark while also giving residents living east/northeast off 7th Avenue SW full access to affordable housing across their neighborhoods until it could be developed further - all done without any input or public hearings! Nine months later on July 5th 1905, just two weeks after receiving Governor Goodwin Liu's proclamation designating Montclair an official city Limits Commission seat within Alameda County underemergency authority following massive fires burning throughout Northern California that year – amalgamated District 2 made up mostly of rural areas north/northwest Of Oakland – merged with District 1 forming what we know today as Downtown Newark! Two years later on December 15th 1907 mayor Montgomery added another community adjacent to East Palo Alto – Willow Glen –to become part of Montclair proper making it possible for him finally manage to annex both communities thanks largely to pressure from fellow Democrat Hiram Johnson who saw Willow Glen growth potential given its close proximity by meansof major highway improvements being made at that time near then current day Interstate 80 & Pleasanton Road which would open up much more forested areas surrounding Willow Glen making it easier for people working outside the city limits than existing inside them) renamed Westmont after his home state OF WASHINGTON D C where he served four terms commencingJanuary 3rd 1915 thru November 3rd 1921 As Town Clerk before retiring On January 1st 1923 following Americas centennial celebrations becoming eligible for National Public Service Awards program administered by US Department Of Labor becoming first African American man ever elected As Commissioner And remaining In office until retiring On November 3rd 1931
