Monrovia, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 24,043 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Contra Costa County by area. The city's eastern edge is on the Richmond River and its western edge is on the San Francisco Bay waterfront. Monrovia was founded as an agricultural community in 1879 by Isador Carpentier and his wife Mary Anna Marsh. The first post office in Monrovia was established in 1881. The first store was operated by J.C. Nichols & Co.. In 1886, a group of investors led by Harry Chandler purchased all of the stock of Pacific Western Railway Company from its founder James Irvine for $5,000 cash and began to build a railroad town around it called Chandler Pointe (later renamed Monrovia). Over time, other developers followed suit and Monrovia became one of Northern California's most rapidly growing cities with over 100 businesses opening up between 1880 and 1910. In 1916, Don Bruce opened what would become Bruce's famous Chinese restaurant named Dragon Garden which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in town because of its unique architecture and cuisine dating back to the early 1900s when many immigrants from China arrived here seeking away from social unrest back home during that era. During World War II, General Douglas MacArthur assigned Monrovia as his headquarters after he vacated Sausalito due to raids conducted against his forces there by Japanese forces; however due to population growth within monaco VALLEY (i1899-1909) had outgrown that small undeveloped area surrounding monaco proper so MacArthur shifted most operations southward into Vallejo with only MONROVIAN military commanders remaining quartered therein until 1945 when MONROVIAN GHETTO rose up against US occupying forces resulting in official evacuation/occupation ending years later following V-J Day formal surrender ceremony at Sausalito Naval Base). As part of postwar reforms undertaken pursuant thereto certain areas adjoining monaco proper were designated as "VALLEJO SAN FRANCISCO" while other portions thereof were designated as "MONROVIA".
