The town grew rapidly due to irrigation projects built by local farmers and men working for the Western Pacific Railroad. By 1907, Monrovia had a full-fledged post office and two hotels; it also boasted three churches and two schools. In 1915, the first grocery store opened in town; it became an anchor point for farmworkers coming into town to buy goods available only at nearby Hearst Ranch stores. During World War II, many American servicemen were stationed in or evacuated to Monrovia during Operation Crossroads which targeted Japanese forces operating along Interstate 80 near Fresno
