Monrovia is a city in California, United States. The population was 17,463 at the 2010 census. The city lies on the eastern edge of San Joaquin Valley and is bordered by Fresno to the north, Bakersfield to the east, Kings River to the south and west, and Kern County to the northwest. The name "Monrovia" is thought to be derived from Montero Rancho de las Animas (now part of Del Norte County). In 1846, Josiah Beale surveyed what would become Monrovia when he bought Rancho Las Animas from Juana Sanchez de la Torre. In 1851, John Cranch founded a post office called "Mormon City" after his family left Utah for California in 1847. Mormon settlers arrived in Mono County in 1850 and established a town named "Mormon City." Their new town was located close to present-day downtown Monrovia. On July 4, 1865, General James Halleck ordered all military officers stationed around California to move their forces into central California because of an outbreak of cholera that had struck Los Angeles two weeks earlier. A detachment under Colonel George Armstrong reached Mormon City late on July 3rd and found that it had been abandoned by its inhabitants who had gone into hiding during the night. Lieutenant Colonel Edward Sibley's brigade moved into Mormon City on July 4th and found that it also was abandoned save for some scattered dwellings surrounded by Indian reserves. On July 8th Captain Luther Pogue discovered evidence that people had returned to Mormon City from surrounding Indian reservations – there were animals led away with saddles still attached! A formal investigation revealing arson within Mormon City began onJuly 9th but no one was ever arrested or charged as a result of this findings… nonetheless it served as a warning not to venture any further into what appeared thenuninhabitable land outside of Coloma Earls Native settlement blockeeagoi (the modern day area bounded by First Street southward along Second Street eastward; Bunker Hill Avenue northward). LDS Church President Brigham Young authorized ranches east of Coloma Earls Settlement blockeeagoi – including present day ranching areas adjacent thereto – under his personal supervision without involving local authorities until after Mexican independence in 1848allowance was given for such operations pursuant to Treaty between Great Britain and Mexico dated February 16th,1848 which ended Anglo-American influence over Mexico’s internal affairs
