In 1898-99 monsoon rains caused widespread flooding which destroyed much of hismlockforestation; however smallpox (a disease caused by the Variola virus) vaccination campaigns made up for this damage The city entered into partnership with nearbyPetaluma in 1912 to form what is now known as Northern California Regional Transit District (NCRTD). The NRDTD provided bus transportation between both towns until 1977 when Amtrak took over operation During World War II many civilian jobs were created around aircraft plant areas such as engine testing or metal fabrication After World War II most manufacturing activity stopped due to economic recession but some new businesses have arisen such as software development or agricultural products Monrovia experienced its worst fire disaster since 1959 when 152 buildings burned down including 42 homes which left 93 families homeless
Monrovia was founded in 1875 by James W. Monro, a machinist and businessman. The name is derived from the Spanish word "mórrus" meaning "mountain." Monrovia became an agricultural center due to its well-watered location and fertile soil.
