Monrovia is a city in the Central Valley of California, United States. It is located on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Fresno and 80 miles (130 km) southeast of Sacramento. Monrovia was founded by Spaniards in 1821 as Rancho Rincon de Santa Ana, named for General José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla who had served as governor of New Mexico. The community was platted in 1835 and incorporated as a city on February 16, 1886. The population was 68,898 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Monrovia was established in 1836, and remained open until it closed on December 15, 1861 due to lack of customers. During World War II, Monrovia played an important role as both a munitions production site and headquarters for the United StatesAAF Eighth Air Force during Operation Overlord. With its large airfields nearby such as Anza-Borrego Desert Field and Yuma Proving Ground Naval Air Station No.-4 (later known as Imperial Japanese Navy Aichi D3A2 “Betty”), Monrovia became one of the most heavily bombed cities during World War II with over 90% destruction from bombings alone. Many buildings still stand today including City Hall Annex which was damaged but still stands; Packing House #1 which sustained extensive damage from bomb strikes; Post Office Building which lost its roof but still stands; barracks where many American soldiers were housed before they were shipped off to fight overseas; Bldg.#5 which housed numerous factories that produced ammunition and other materials used during World War II; Army Ammunition Plant also located here along with other industries that produced weapons throughout war

Monrovia is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 76,813 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Orange County after Anaheim and is the largest city east of Los Angeles. The first European to visit what is now Monrovia were two Spanish explorers, Gaspar de Portolà and Alonso de Legazpi on March 25, 1769 during their trip from Mexico City to La Jolla. They named it San Miguel y Atacama for Ignacio Narváez who had preceded them there on February 15th. The area that became Monrovia was part of Rancho Cucamonga which was granted by Governor Manuel Nieto on July 14th, 1827 to José Joaquín Monterey y Costilla as part of Rancho Santa Ana del Norte. Mexicans started farming here in 1835 and built homes around Mission Bay before American troops burned down the mission in 1849 because they did not like Mexican residents living near US military installations. A post office called San Pedro Sula opened in 1853 and remained open until 1907; its last letter being "P." The name change came about because an L shaped lot had been planned for development but no one wanted to build there because it would have been across from Mission Bay Naval Base where warships unloaded supplies for use by sailors afloat and ashore. In 1908 a group of six businessmen bought an old adobe building at 210 Neches Street from José Castro which housed a brokerage business; they renamed it First National Bank Building after former president Grover Cleveland's first inauguration as President of the United States on January 20th, 1909. In 1915 bank president James Wickersham donated land adjacent to his home at 309 E State St., now known as Wickersham Plaza, so that Monrovia could be founded as an incorporated town with a library and other civic amenities under one roof accessible by everyone without charge or subscription once considered essential elements of American town planning since biblical days when citizens met together annually to resolve problems (1 Chronicles 17:19). On November 1st 1916 incorporation papers were filed with the California Secretary of State; Monrovia became an official town under CA state law following passage by the voters said matter through a referendum held three days later that certified 64% yes vote against any changes proposed by opponents who claimed that lack of access would make life difficult for small towns throughout California due bothto transportation issues (accessibility was already becoming increasingly problematical due to increasing automobile use)and also worries over possible competition from nearby cities such as Ventura which had recently become self-sufficient via annexing portions of neighboring counties including Riverside/San Bernardino/Ontario etc.). The new town boundaries followed Route 66 north then east along Hospital Drive past Pajarito Creek into residential areas just south of Interstate 5 then turned northwest onto Military Road until terminating at present day western edgeState Route 66 where I-5 meets Interstate 8
