Monrovia is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 37,822 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area. The first people to live in what is now Monrovia were Native American chiefs and their followers who journeyed there from coastal valleys near Stockton during winter times for food. In 1849, gold was discovered at Oroville but no one rushed to establish a town on its site because of this discovery. A few men established a hacienda on Rancho El Corral which became known as mineshaft City when many rich veins of gold were found nearby including Eastman Reef and Long Valley; however, these initial discoveries did not attract large numbers of settlers until after 1850 when Calafia Mines began production with an output of over $1 million per year by 1861. A post office called Monrovia was established in 1851, but it did not remain operational long because most mail traveled via Sacramento or San Francisco and even those messages went unopened due to high postage rates then prevailing. In 1857, two brothers born in China named Wm E Haddon opened an opium store just east of present day downtownMonrovia adjacent to what is now China Basin Park which became one of America's earliest Chinatowns serving as a commercial center forinese immigrants living throughout Northern California as well as parts of Nevada and Arizona until 1975 when that area was razed following urban renewal plans . In 1870 lumber magnate James Fenton purchased Rancho El Corral from Manuel Nieto and moved his family into it where they continue to live today; Fenton later sold all his land within Contra Costa County including Monrovvia making him one of its largest landowners ever . He also founded Pacific Electric Railway company whose tracks ran through downtownMonrovvia right past their house which still stands today! It was founded on November 15, 1853 by Jonathon Monro and wife Mary Ann Murphy as the "Town of Monrovia" following their purchase of land from Captain Pierson. The town became an independent city on December 6, 1858. The original boundaries of the city were 12th Street to the south and east, Vine Street to the north, and Broadway to the west. Today's borders are wider but still include most of what was once part of Monrovia. The first post office in Monrovia was established on November 15, 1853. The first mayor of Monrovia was J.P Fenton with Wm Huggins serving as his deputy. In 1861, John Giannini became mayor after winning a special election against incumbent George Ahern Jr.. Today's downtown area contains several notable buildings including City Hall (c 1840), Bank of America Building (1910), American Legion Post No 1 (1897), and Southern Pacific Depot (1907). Some other buildings that remain include African American Slave Market building constructed c 1860-1861 by Solomon Davenport and two churches: First Presbyterian Church built in 1888 and Methodist Episcopal Church built in 1915 both remain standing today despite many damage attempts over time In 1862-1863 there were three fires; one near City Hall which destroyed much property including some stores; another near Bank of America building where one store burned down; and finally a very large fire at Southern Pacific Depot burning for days which caused extensive damage including $1 million in lost revenue
