The town gained its name from Mr./Mrs. Ayer's daughter namesake - AnnaMaria (Majer) Ayer (1829-1902), who married David Wolkart on October 14th 1857 in Visalia and lived in Mendocino County until her death on January 10th 1902; her husband later served as Mayor of Sacramento from 1903 to 1911 before becoming U.S Ambassador to China during World War I In 1865 after many years of development work by farmers and entrepreneurs such as Jesse Barnes & his brother-in-law John Sutter, the first post office called ranchos opened with mail service coming through Bakersfield only 3 times per week between Sacramento and Stockton due to prohibitive costs associated with railroad construction across Central Valley towns like Fresno and Oakland On April Fool's Day 1865 Californian John Sutter mailed items including letters but no postage stamps or coinage orders himself expecting customers in Southern California to prank him instead he received just 1 letter back - "This will do for ordinary Postal Service" A year later on May 15th 1870 local rancher Manuel Gomez purchased Mail Stop #2 from George Hearn for $5 which became the first store in town After 5 months old Gomez ran out of money so reopened at Main Street and offered goods free with every purchase . By 1875 business had become so busy that he added a second store next door at 300 Main which continued operation until 1906 when it burned down . It wasn't until 1907 when Hermann Hesse established his meatpacking plant northeast side main Street making it possible for people outside the city limits access to central valley quality agricultural products . From then on Modesto exploded growth with new businesses opening up all along downtown Main Street giving rise to what is known today as The Gilded Age eraEconomic boom followed while citizens voted against annexation by Sacramento resulting in over 20 years without annexing any other cities or counties making it one of most rural areas in California
