Modesto is a city in the Stanislaus County, California, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Modesto's economy is based on agriculture and small-town services. The name "Modesto" means "low key"; it comes from Spanish words meaning "calm and serene." The first Europeans to visit present-day Modesto were Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his crew of entrepreneurs in 1769–70. The area was part of Rancho San Joaquin de Bakersfield until 1847, when it became part of the U.S. state of California.
