Modesto was founded by Captain George Atherton on December 3, 1852 during his expedition to explore what is now Fresno County. It was named for General John Folsom who had commanded American forces at Fort Yuma in 1846-47 before retreating to California with Wedgwood's army under United States General James K. He did however gift land east of present day Modesto to Nathaniel Hawthorne along with $5,000 cash which Hawthorne used to purchase a 640 acre (250 hectare) parcel from Simeon Tate near today's downtown Modesto on March 12, 1853 for $1 per acre ($5 per hectare). Hawthorne had been appointed Surveyor General for California under Mexican rule and had surveyed part of what is now Modesta including today's downtown when he received news of Atherton's explorations nearby in November 1851 while on vacation at his ranch north of San Francisco Bay called Mount Sutro where he died two years earlier on September 25th, 1850 after a long journey across country including crossing over into Mexico twice while driving down one side street into another town known as Sinagoga de los Padres de la Patria (Church Of The Fathers Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe). Captain George Atherton discovered oil seeps west of modern day Sacramento but no commercial production took place until 1890 when an entrepreneur named John Sutter began extracting gas from Anaconda Creek near Red Bluff using explosives before selling rights back to Captain George Atherton for $2 per barrel ($37 US dollars/day).
