On January 1st, 1898 an act establishing Stanislaus County was approved by Congress (). The first school in Modesto was built west of Town Hall on Railroad Avenue in 1876 (). It closed due to lack of funds within a few years but reopened as West Side High School in 1888 (). The original building still stands today as part of United Methodist Central Elementary School District No 4 ().. In 1907 Charles Fenton opened a grocery store at 2nd and Spring Streets which became known as Fenton's Market ()-. Another grocer named Johnnie Moore opened his store at 5th Street and Washington Avenue soon after().. later that year another grocery store also opened at 5th Street and Washington Avenue called Moore's Grocery (). MrsMoore's Store continued operations until it burned down in 1951 (). In 1922 Johnnie Moore left business ownership stake to his son Royce who ran it until he sold it to other family members including his daughter Lois who operated it until her death in 2006 (). That same year Harry Jaffe founded Jaffe's Deli which remains open today at 1521 Main Street (), originally a small convenience store that served Japanese immigrants during World War II (). The name comes from Spanish for "modest." In 1853, John Sutter founded the town on his property north of Sacramento. Modesto grew slowly until World War II when it exploded with growth due to agricultural production and new housing developments. Today, Modesto is one of the strongest economic engines in Northern California and a center for technology and innovation. The first Europeans to visit this area were Juan Bautista de Anza on May 2, 1769, during his exploration of what is now central California. De Anza named this area San Jose del Valle de la Muerte because he thought there might be an Indian settlement hereabouts. A Mission San Francisco de Asís was established by Father Junipero Serra on December 12, 1817 in what is today downtown Modesto. With its completion in 1825, San Francisco became the capital of Alta California under Mexican rule before becoming part of United States control following Mexico's withdrawal from that jurisdiction at our independence from Spain on October 15,1821. At that time Yuba County also joined Alta Californa as part of Uinta County which made Modesto one of two counties within Mexican America (the other being Monterey). When American settlers arrived in these parts they were very much outnumbered by Native Americans who had been living here for many centuries with no threat from them whatsoever! Unfortunately for both sides some early conflicts took place which led to large numbers dead and injuries on both sides including a number killed outright while raiding other tribes or settlements! One such incident took place near present day Dixon City where 23 men were killed by Sitting Bull resulting in US military action known as Black Hawk War after General William Tecumseh Sherman's push into Indian Territory northeastward along the Missouri River between 1847-1849! Although smallpox epidemics occurred among American troops stationed here periodically during this time period most notably around 1846-48 when over 150 people died due to smallpox contracted while deployed through Sonoma County - it was not until 1900 that fully effective public health measures began to be instituted throughout all portions of North America!!!!!! Ironically enough as late as 1912 nearly half a century later more than 120 cases per annum were reported among young adult males living west of Sacramento!!!
